Gibson SG in soft case? Any risk?

I'm asking as I am new to the SG, and Gibson guitars in general, and it seems to me that you mostly see them being transported in a hardcase. Rarely a soft case. Is there any reason for this? Is there a risk of damage to an SG (the headstock/neck for example) if it is carried in such a case?

I do have a good quality hard case (molded specifically for SGs), but I am attending a pretty full music theory/sight reading class and this bulky hardcase will not be practical. Up till now, I had been using my strat, but it needs work done and so I want to bring my new SG instead. So I would basically be using the same softcase I was using to transport my strat.

Can I do this safely? It's an SG Standard btw. Thanks.

Bad, bad idea with a set neck guitar. I've even seen Gibsons break headstocks while in a hard case. Gig bags are fine for Fender style guitars.

A softcase is generally a bad idea with a Gibson. There are some soft cases with a lot of support aruod the headstock. These tend to be expensive and some are even bulkier than a hard case!

If you really need to go the soft route, get a Mono case, has a neck brace that works. Now if you're gonna drop it down a flight of stairs, it wouldn't be a good idea with one of those, but it is an excellent case. I have a double case and transport whatever I want to. Expensive, but worth it, IMO......

the problem is the design of the Gibson tilt-back headstocks. Other guitar makers have improved this and made it more impervious to breakage, but you are making the right call not using a soft gig bag. there are some awesome light-weight hard-side gig bags out there.

I use a gig bag with my '62 SG, and in fact my historic Les Paul is in a gig bag in my trunk right now.

If you plan on throwing it around, packing stuff on it, or having other people carry it, then get a hard case. Nothing wrong with gig bags.

I strongly feel that the stock Gibson gig bags are terrible when used with a Gibson guitar. The reason is the tilt back headstock as mentioned before. At least get an equivalent Epiphone hard case in place of the gig bag; the Epi cases are very similar to the Gibson ones for far less money. I've toted my ES-333 and SG in Epi cases for years, they work and fit perfectly.

I have a regular Gibson USA case for my SG and its hardly thicker than a gig bag. Play it safe and use a case.

Slightly OT but I was wondering just the other day: does anyone make a hard shell case with a strap or two so that the guitar could be carried on your shoulder or worn on your back as it is with most soft shell cases?

But what? I take care of my guitars, and in fact, the only time I have had a guitar break in a case, it was in a hard case.

No, what I'm saying is that he a has a direct connection for replacements at artist pricing, and he gets a tax break on them.

I sling my LP Jr. and LP in a Mono Dual gigbag without any problems.

Sometimes I carry them in the boot of my car, and sometimes on my back driving a Vespa.

I wouldn't do so with regular, run-of-the-mill gig bags, but with the Mono I have no more worries than I would with a hard case.
