I've read contrasting reports of how Gibson achieve their VOS finishes. Some people say they simply miss out the final buffing stage...others say (with photo evidence) that they actually add a compound over a fully polished guitar to achieve the dulled look.

Anyone know for sure? And if it's the latter, any idea what the compound is? It appears stickier and "grubbier" on some instruments, particularly new Memphis historics.

It also polishes to a normal finish with elbow grease.

That would be Custom Authentic, pre VOS.

VOS, guitar is Red wheeled in buffing, then a cocktail solvent is slathered on the finish then wiped off around 10 minutes after... then off to final assembly.

Ok since the experts are out on this thread, is it safe to polish a VOS finished guitar with say Gibson polish or will it change the finish?

I have an R8 with a VOS finish. I use Gibson polish on it during most string changes and it still looks exactly like the day I bought it. Granted, it's an opaque finish (golden mist) that wouldn't be that shiny to begin with.

Polishing a VOS finish will make it look glossy over VOS.

The VOS finish can be rubbed off. In fact, I did it on the back of the neck because it was too sticky.

I don't think it immediately becomes glossy. There isn't a "glossy" finish under the VOS chemical. Rather, a "slightly glossy", or "satin" finish under the sticky stuff.

After awhile of playing, that chemical will rub off anyway, leaving you a slightly dull guitar.

You forgot the special herbs, or did you leave that detail out on purpose?

Virtuoso Cleaner and Polish with some effort on your part will make a VOS finish into a Gloss finish. The neck needs the most attention as it really is sticky and kind if a pain in the neck.

you can clean it off with naphtha, then polish.
    or,
take it to a tech, have it dismantled, cleaned up,
white wheeled the finish, polish it up,
setup, and it be like a shiny.

This is how they do Satin finishes; not sure if it's a compound, but the matte finish is sprayed over a thin gloss finish.
