Are they available yet?
Not yet, but it is going to the cabinet builder this week. Should be available in about 4 weeks.
Is it going to be a d-style cab? Can you describe the tone?
This January will be a year on your list. only 12 months more to go.....
I checked in 2 or 3 months ago and I think the estimate was like 4-5 months or something. I think I got on the list in 2006 but Im not sure.
It is similar, but not the same. Cabinet is a little wider and deeper, ports are a little bigger. It does borrow the diffraction / stiffening strips from the HAD cabinets. The design is optimally flat to around 75Hz. The cabinet is designed around the Electrovoice Classic 12L. Others may work, but I will ONLY recommend the 12L (or maybe the Emmy Delta Pro 12A, but I need to test) for this cabinet. Thiele cabinets tend to unload the driver at frequencies near the port tuning. At this frequency range the driver cab easily be extended past its normal linear working range (Xmax) when playing at high volumes. This can cause distortion and possibly damage the driver. The 12L is ideal in this applications due to it's +/- 3.3mm Xmax rating. (The typical guitar speaker Xmax is normally under .5mm)
Sound.. well best way to describe it is more and tighter bass than an open back. Think punchier. A little more directive than an open back.
Any new news.....
I have built a prototype of the cabinet and it tuned as expected and sounded as expected. This protoype was loaded with an 8 ohm EVM 12L,
I have two samples arriving this week. If they meet expectations I will price them up and they will be available. Should be able to start taking orders as early as next week.
They should be competitively priced. I will be offering them loaded or unloaded. Currently offering is EVM 12L's either 8 or 16 ohms. I am also working with celestion to offer another speaker that is optimized for Thiele operation.
Specs and pictures available on the website.
Great detail idea in the gold piping -- the grill cloth seems exceptionally transparent -- and because it probably is acoustically transparent as well; can you say who makes/provides that grill cloth?
The grill is the standard black grill cloth that is available from Mojotone. It looks a little more transparent due to the camera flash.
FWIW, the actual company that makes the grill cloth is Mellotone and they have some very nice options avaialble as well as custom designs if you want to pony up the bucks.
