I play tube combos that are open back.

Looking for a good general purpose 12" speaker (between 30 to 50 watts) that I can swap between various combo amps.

    - Suggestions (either ceramic or alnico)

    - How are neos (blah sounding? so-so? great?)

Can't generalise with neos. Some neos take full advantage of the magnetic properties and hence are very aggressive, some are designed to have the magnetic force-field of a ceramic or alnico speaker.

For what amp are you shopping the speaker?

+1 on the Governor, or Red, White, & Blues if you want something a bit less british.

Hard to make speaker speaker suggestions to begin with-its harder without knowing a bit about the type of tone your after and style of music your into. General purpose is pretty vague. Makes me think Celestion 70/80. Not a bad speaker but seemingly "general purpose" and put stock in many combo's. Bob

Price range and taste in genre make a bit of a difference here.

Weber Sig12B. Great all-around speaker at a price that won't break the bank.
