less than an inch too narrow for a Les Paul. Any ideas on what to make without adding to it's width?

If I were to add to it's width better to split and add a centre 'feature' or stick an extra inch on the lower bout so the pups are in a solid block.

Make your own shape to fit the block of wood.

Seriously, I know your pain. I was building my daughter a desk with some 3/4" x 6" eastern maple I got from a local supplier. There was one board that had that great subtle flame that you only get in eastern where it shimmers as you change the angle of view. But the two pieces together would only be about 11 3/4" when jointed. So one side of her desk has a great flamed panel.

LoL ... that might actually look kind of cool :)

I'd probably grain match using some of the excess and add to the lower bout.
If you chose wisely, it can be very hard to find the seam.

It might be cool split in half with a figured maple neck-through.

Actually more like 12 7/8", give or take. But you could lay it out with a slight bias to the grain and get it to fit.

You mean rotate the template slightly on the slab?

Hmmm - interesting. Better than adding wings?
