There was never any doubt that this would turn into a money grab.
Apologies to Crowder (I almost always dig your posts, I really do - but I have to post this not targeted at you in particular but generally).
Cool. Sounds fun.
Why John Mayer? I mean I like John Mayer ok, but just seems like kind of an odd fit. I wonder where that connection came from. I guess they can play with whomever they like though, even if it doesn't fit the traditional "Grateful Dead Brand" for lack of a better term. I mean when it comes down to it, these guys are just people/musicians that happened to form this iconic band. So, in some ways in shouldn't be a surprise if they are playing with people whom their fans don't really think fits "the mold".
No Grateful Dead. Fare Thee Well is the name.
Lesh is not touring anywhere, the five shows only. Mike Gordon I think on bass if it happens.
Musicians play gigs. People go if they want. Or they don't.
If this idea tours w/JM...I'm in, ticket sold !
John over the last few years has become a very big dead head, and has been covering dead tunes in his live shows. When he hosted the late late show recently he played with Bob Weir as well.
Yeah I did see the late show, didn't realize he'd been covering their tunes live. Thanks EricPeterson.
Sounds good to me I'd definitely seem them.
Yeah, I'd just LOVE to hear pentatonic minor licks over a bunch of great Dead tunes. Yup, sign me up.
Sorry but he doesn't have the vocabulary to hang in this gig.
I do like a lot of his songs but I've never been that impressed by his SRV-inspired lead playing.
People's heads are exploding all over TGP World...
im thinking the grateful dead world is blossoming in a pretty beautiful way. Love how Phil is nurturing so many great artists at his terrapin crossings. So many great musicians coming and going, it's pretty cool if your a fan. You never know what combo might pop up next. Phil may not tour(believe that when I see it) but he has his own private paradise at Terrapin where he plays and sits in with so many great names. Maybe he's asking folks to come to him when they want to see him. As far as John Mayer playing lead man, I'm sure it'll be awesome.
The grateful dead are burying their collective hatchets an putting up with each other for about a week because they think their fans deserve it. If Phil and Booby want to learn Johnny to Jam after that I'm sure they could sell some tickets. I don't think the demand for a full tour will be there like for the limited shows.... And really it sounds like it would be asking too much of the original members on a number of levels. But if all Mayers fans started dosing and going to jam band shows, I won't object. But I'm not "waiting for the world to change"
The other thing the remaining members of the Dead are doing is planting new seeds in anticipation of the day they're literally dead. And I'm glad they're doing it.
Yeah, but those seeds were planted over the past three decades and have been bearing fruit for a solid 20 years now already. We are everywhere!
Mixolydian for days, how hard can it be
There's no way Phil Lesh will be involved IMO. In fact, Lesh has not taken part in the sessions with Mayer at TRI studios. The bass player from Phish has been playing instead of Lesh. It will more likely be something like Ratdog with Mayer.
BTW, check out the youtube vid of Lesh and Frisell at Terrapin Crossroads on 4/22/15. Now, that's a show I would like to see. No stadium, beautiful gd music for hours on end in a small venue, fantastic sound system, and a guitarist who plays with the Jerry vibe as well as his own thing. Sign me up. Man, I'd like to see Frisell and Kimock together!
There would be no better way to expand his vocabulary than playing this gig.
But I don't see it being the Dead. Maybe members of the Dead. The story said "select members."
I highly doubt this is anything but a rumor. Who are these "insiders"?
Not going to happen. Chicago will be the end.
