Bob Mayo's playing on Frampton's albums inspired me to take up keys. He'll always be my favorite part of the Frampton band and my favorite keys player.

All these are great. But IMO Bill Payne has to be in the conversation too.

Don't forget Harry Connick Jr. I'm a total fanboy of his - he knows how to shred (funky orleans upbeat jazz piano style) like no man's business.

Anyone ever seen Connick Jr play guitar? Holy smokes he can play guitar! I was shocked when I saw him in concert several years ago. On one song he walked around and grabbed every instrument in his band. And he could play every one of me incredibly well. He absolutely shredded an electric guitar like it was the only thing he had ever played every day of his life. What a talent that guy is.

There are a lot of really good organ/electric piano players in the 60s - the guy in the Animals, the guy in the Zombies.

There are a lot of good synthesists, in the 70s - Edgar Winter group, ELP, Yes, Styx (yes, Styx), Journey.

    Jordan Rudess.

Then there's all the guys who played another instrument in the band, but who were also good keyboard players - John Paul Jones, Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend.

Then there's Parliament Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, etc.

Then there's Jazz, which puts pretty much any rock players to shame.

Then there's classical, which puts pretty much any jazz players to shame.

But you only asked about Rock and Roll :)
