In the spirit of all the recent "why" threads here goes.

So I dropped off a guitar at GC too have a tech install new tuners.
While I was waiting for service the usual wanking was going on.
2 youngsters who werent too loud and a old guy (like me) who was louder and not concerned with in tune playing at all.
So I leave and come back 3 hours later and said "old guy" is still wanking badly.
Why on earth would you noodle like that for hours at a Music store or anywhere public is beyond me.
Is it boredom, egotistic or just plain daft?
    :jo:jo

Every time I make the mistake of wandering into Guitar Center, I encounter the following simultaneously without fail:
-metalhead kid trying to shred on a hilariously overdriven amp but failing miserably
-old surf rock dude wailing on "Misirlou" through a Fender amp
-Rasta dude slapping a 5+ string bass plugged into a Gallien-Krueger
    -migraine

As far as the "why", I don't know.

Maybe we need a thread on A) why anyone would need help replacing tuners and if so B) why they'd trust GC with their guitar.

Once I was in GC and a guy on the other side of the display was playing a nice blues. I accompanied him and complemented what he was doing for a good stretch, figuring it would be a GC first... two musicians playing together. He didn't even notice. Ha ha ha. GC.

Right. That's why I only go into GC on a Monday late morning, when hardly anyone is there.

Why not ask the old dude why? I've seen it several times too. I'd love to just ask...

Whether it's getting their rocks off in GC or playing in a band, most non or semi professionals never bother to actually LISTEN to what's going on.

I brought a long time bass playing friend of mine to an open mic last week. We played a couple of things and then some of the other musicians asked him to play with them as well.
One of the comments he made later...was "How do those guys play together (answer very poorly) there's no eye contact, no connection to the other players and no listening going on."

If people don't pay a hell of a lot of attention while playing with others, they're going to pay even less at GC.

I feel like I'm walking into an episode of The Twilight Zone when I go to a GC. The dissonance is dizzying and unbearable at times.

Again, I am back at why would anyone need to go to a tech to install new machine heads, and why go to GC? Everything else mentioned was par for the place.

If you are middle-aged, not in a band, and not playing anywhere, it's the closest thing to an audience you can get.

At the same time, it's an "undercover" way of attracting attention. If people like what you are doing, you can enjoy the attention. If they don't, you can pretend you are just trying out gear and not really looking for attention.

How else are you gonna get a HUGE record deal?!?! Don't you know all talent scouts cruise the aisles of Guitar Center? Btw, I wouldn't trust GC to replace a set of strings on a $29 ukulele. I mean absolutely no offense, I just think you'd have much better luck with a local luthier/ guitar tech. Ask on here for some suggestions that are in whatever city you live in. I can't give the GC wankers too much hell, I'm sure I did that when I was a teen. Luckily I had grown out of it by the time I was 17 or so.

They're killing time, playing the riffs they know, trying out gear. No big deal.

Eh some of us just dont want to deal with it. I can install/fix pretty much anything on my guitars but I usually dont have the time.

I've never used GC for that but to each his/her own.
