    Guitar thief gets 3 years
    Tribune staff report
    12:44 PM CDT, May 16, 2008

A former night maintenance man at Wheaton College was sentenced Friday to 3 years in prison for stealing three guitars, two of which were sold on the Internet.

Tim Cavalieri, 41, a former night maintenance man at the college's Billy Graham Center, was convicted by a DuPage County jury in April. The Elburn resident stole a 1983 Fender Stratocaster Elite, a Charvel Surfcaster and an Ibanez AR in March 2007 from a locked storage room, authorities said.

The theft was discovered when Bruce Knowlton, owner of the guitars and a college department manager, noticed them missing. After making a report to the college's Public Safety Department, Knowlton checked online auction site eBay and found a sales listing and picture of his Fender with a minimum bid of $2,800.

He later discovered that the two other guitars had been sold for more than $1,500. Cavalieri claimed he thought the guitars had been abandoned.

    wow...$2800 for an '83 elite.

    I don't know if I'd pay even 1/4th that for an '83.

To me, the punishment seems too severe, but maybe there are other circumstances (such as prior crimes). Congrats to the owner for catching the guy.

The guy is a damn thief. Plus a liar (abandonded?). If HE was concerned about a severe sentence, perhaps he should have plead guilty and thrown himself on the mercy of the court.

In my opinion, it should be longer, because being caught certainly did not have him accepting responsibility. Maybe he will learn that in prison, among other things.

It would be interesting to know how much of the prison sentence is actually served before this guy gets sprung.

I think the sentence was harsher because he ripped some fools off on eBay for $1,500 (if we actually are to believe the article)! :D

How'd that Willie Nelson song go?

Something like "You can't hang a man for killing a woman / Who's trying to steal your guitar", I think.

In prison he wont learn anything that should be learnt!

Definitely a pretty harsh sentence - 3 yrs in jail for stealing some property. There have been rapists that didn't get 3 years.

I remember reading about the Gibson Display Semi getting broken into a few years ago in Chicago and a number of guitars were stolen.
Wonder if they got them back, and busted the criminals who did it?

Yeah, there is a locked storage room in our community center that has an old Martin acoustic in it that no one's touched for like 10 years. (Don't worry it's only about 15 years old - not some pre-war vintage collectors item.) Nobody even knows who it belongs to.

I can imagine someone feeling opportunistic one day, and moving it onto Ebay. It seems 3 years was a bit harsh, considering the guy probably even had the key to the room. There must have been something more to the story, or as has been mentioned a few times already, a prior conviction.
