The drug-addicted guitarist has achieved something of a mythical status in today's world. I really can't see any 22-year-old up and comers shooting heroin and not immediately crashing and burning.

I'll admit this is ignorance on my part, but I have to ask, how can someone get into hard drugs if they were born after the 1980's? Who seriously looks at all the junkies they pass on the streets every day and says, 'Well, gee-whiz. I'll have what he's having!'

I don't get it. Not one bit.

He described it in his autobiography. For years the guy was frequently about as wasted as anyone could possibly get. If it wasn't heroin it was alcohol. It is amazing that he has lived this long and most of the time he has looked pretty good all things considered.

I Did a boatload of Coke back in the day. It was a recreational thing that turned into a habit.I was a high functioning addict.Went to work without sleep many times. Those were the days that I got nothing done.

Because: No one believes becoming a nodded-out human wreck passing out in the street could possibly happen to THEM. Because, initially, they're only doing smack on the weekends. No way to get addicted like that. Until you happen to have a bad tuesday or wednesday and maybe need a little something to take the edge off. Opiates can feel REALLY good initially and the nasty side only tends to sneak up on you from behind after some time.

I thought Saul went into pretty great detail about how he did it.

Up until they hit 27 anyway.

By being a working musician or working in food service. Almost everybody else has to pee in a cup to get a job and keep working, at least in the US.

For many it is and ironically it in some ways impedes their playing as well.

My understanding is that Heroin is cheap and easy to get. The addiction rates are higher now than they were in the old days.
It's awful easy to get hooked up on the current drugs, and some of the stigmas are gone. Still wrecks lives though.

I couldn't find an autobiography by someone called "Saul Hudson". Someone called "Slash" co-authored one, though.

That's the pseudonym that Saul uses. Good job!

Come on. It's obvious that calling people by a name they don't normally go by is more clear. Right? Uh... right?

Many heroin addicts didn't get hooked on heroin, they got hooked on prescription meds. Unfortunately heroin can be cheaper than the legal drugs.
Not all drug addiction is a choice. Not that you were saying that it was.

I guess I don't know him well enough to use anything but Slash.

    Good job!

You don't have to know him at all. It's his legal name.

BTW, there was a clue in the post I quoted, where another member mentioned "slashes autobiography".
