I dismissed the video at first as just more content to feed the beast. I finally watched it and I couldn't believe even I could hear the difference. Everyone went to heavier gauges after hearing that SRV used 13's. Apparently before his passing he was down to 10's. Hendrix and Beck used 8's and 9's. Zappa used 7's! I'm considering 9's on my tele after 25 years of 10's. Might be dumb because I have to do a record in 2 weeks. Has anyone made the switch?

Haven’t yet but I think I’m going to - always been a 10 on fenders, 11 on Gibsons guy, probably going to try going down one

No. Started playing with .009's in the late 70's and am still using them to this day. GHS Baby Boomers as long as I can remember as well.

I moved to 7s from 11s. I am still adjusting to over gripping which on 7s pulls the strings out of tune

    for me:
light strings on electric are crap for subtle, narrow, quick vibrato.
    weak on volume.
    crap for digging in.
crap for sustain and sometimes feedback, esp. without a whammy bar.
crap for slide, crap for ebow.
    crap for clean tone.
crap for biiiiig fuzz (which does not include the fuzz-face).
    crap for stable flageolet.

i expect others' mileage to vary wildly; this is just me talking, what i like.
you may well be great at all of those things while using light strings on electric, or not care about nor even work with any of 'em; i accept that.
    you should be happy, too!

I'm a 9-42 user. I put a set of 8-38s on my Ibby S. Not much difference in gain tones. The clean tones thinned out a bit.
I like the feel of the 8's but probably will go back to 9's next string change.

I never used a gauge to begin with, I just look at the numbers on the packet & know to divide by 1,000:

Can’t remember if they started with 11s or 10s but I much preferred the heaviest gauge. I believe they hear with ears for the mix but for straight up guitar tone the heavier strings have more body.

I had a really light touch as a (mediocre) player, but even so I struggled with anything lighter than "10s" or "11s" on electrics.

Definitely not to bloody Ernie Balls, no matter how much product placement there has been in online videos in the last month.

You did hear where he said that he is endorsed by no string companies and only wanted to get the same brand? There was no "product placement" going on.
