Has the used guitar market gone nuts?

Looking at used prices the past few days and they appear to have gone through the roof. Used highway one strats, Gibson Les Pauls, Jackson's and pretty much all of the old Japanese Les Paul copies. And not just the Japanese ebay sellers either. Everything appears at a glance to be clearly overpriced. So much so I wouldn't even bother making an offer. Have these sellers lost there grip on reality or are people paying these like new, or more, prices for used gear now?

I don't buy a lot of used gear so maybe its been this way a while or is this something new? I just remember the days of buying used meant getting lots of great deals. But I just don't see many deals out there now. Has the guitar world been infected with flippers like the housing market? Or is it something else?

I think it has. The guitars I was interested in over the past 5 years (Gibson VOS and reissues, MJT, Fender AVRI and MIJ, etc) all seem to be up 20-35% from a year ago. You can still find deals from time to time, but I haven’t seen nearly as many in the past 8ish months.

I think used guitar sellers have gone nuts. The good thing is, if you price something decently it will probably sell pretty quickly.

Is every single Gibson Les Paul on Ebay sold from Japan now?

    Yes.
Seller's attitude seems to be "Covid? Let's double the price!"

I think it's all gone nuts, yeah. I got chewed out for offering a guy on Offer Up what I paid new for the same year/make/model Gibson SG a couple weeks ago because a friend has been harassing me for years to sell him mine so he can put a bigsby on it. This seller was asking more than a new SG for a 2012 guitar. I thought I was kind and generous.

Nothing's really changed far as I see it, it's just that the stuff that's a great deal is gone fast and all that's left is the overpriced stuff so it makes it seem like everything is overpriced. If you want to see what people are actually paying, it's very simple to do so - just search sold listings (Ebay, Reverb, etc) and you'll get an idea of the going rate for whatever you're lookin' for.

Not just guitars. Man toys in general have gone stupid. I have clients that deal in boats and jet skis, motorcycles, rv’s, and atv’s, etc. they all tell me there best sales months ever have been since covid. The flight school on our field is operating at double what they were before. Keep hearing a lot of folks are off work and with the fed subsidies are making more to set home than they were at their jobs. More money and time on peoples hands driving demand ? If this is true, hope everyone gets back to work before the money runs out. Whatever the case, strange times. Seems usually whenever theres economic uncertainty toys are the first thing to go and to be had cheap. You couldnt give away a twin piston engine airplane in 2009

Yeah, a lot of guitars have practically doubled in price the past 10 years. The more popular they're on instagram or youtube, the more expensive they become.

edit: Some examples I cank think of:

EBMM JP models. I've owned 3 different, and never paid more than $1k for one, some 10 years ago. These days, you'll have to pay double.

Carvin - These used to go dirty cheap, all day long.

Standard USA Strats and Teles. I've probably bought 20 such guitars here on TGP, when people would sell 'em for $500-$600.

Suhr - Paid just over $1k fo my first used Suhr. Could find lower end pro models around that price on the used market. Lowest I ever paid was like $800 for a Pro S1.

I dunno. I'm still seeing all kinds of deals, and have been buying up plenty of them and making money on the ones I don't keep.

I don't think it's just the used market, new too. Granted these are Canadian figures but used USA Strats were $600 - $800 when new ones were $999. Now, that same guitar is $1,999 new. New prices go up and used follow suit. That's how I see it.

I've noticed certain models of guitar have become scarce lately, like Epiphone Casinos. There are plenty of Coupes-the smaller ones-for sale, but not many full size ones. Epiphone Inspired by 1955 Les Paul Customs are virtually gone from the market, as are Flying Vs and Explorers. There are plenty of used Rickenbackers, but the prices are sky high for common stuff. Maybe I should sell my 620 now! It doesn't get much play time, and it's really only a good rhythm guitar, due to the microscopic frets.

I have 3 guitars listed here.
Each is at least $200 LESS than what I paid for it, used, in the last year.
I had an offer on 2 of them.
One a trade that was worth about $500(my guitar is was listed at $950 at the time) and the other $300 shipped across the country($100) for something I have listed for $500 shipped($829 new).
The truth is it is very hard to get fair $$ for a Gibson or Fender, forget about anything else.

Yes the flipper mentality has infected the used gear market unfortunately. Good deals and priced-to-move are not the order of the day. There have been a number of occasions I just went ahead and bought new because it only cost me another 5-to-10%. Many sellers aren't serious about selling and gaining space, they're serious about making 2-&-1/2 times what they spent on their belongings and sitting on them while they wait. It's ok, they're entitled to post whatever price they want, even if it means their stuff gets no interest.

Great post! I’ve noticed a huge jump in used prices for USA Fender and G&L guitars. Ive watched ebay, reverb and Craigslist for years now and prices have jumped 200-300 dollars or more. You’d think that times are tough and people would be dumping gear but it seems being stuck at home is causing people to buy. I’m not sure, but I can’t find a good deal to save my life.

    A year ago:
Fender American Deluxe Strat or Tele excellent condition 700-800. Now 900-1100. I watch hard for these as I feel they are great guitars.

Fender Elite: 900-1100. Now 1300-1400. GC is selling brand new Elites (or were recently) for 1399. People are asking more than new prices.

    G&L ( I got one for 650 a year ago) Now 850-1000.

    Pedals are silly as well.

Where are you guys finding these deals?

12 months ago, I was buying R7s and G0s in the $2,200-2,300 range and Gibson VOS ES guitars in the $1,800-$2,300 range. Now the R7s and G0s seem to be going for $2,700-3,000 and the VOS ES guitars are going from $2,800-3,800.

I used to be a frequent buyer here, on MLP, Reverb, and eBay. I’ve pretty well quit in the last year.

I told everyone here a few years ago that the obsessive compulsive crazy buying would lead to what we are experiencing today.

Anyone interested in a LP? Cheap, 49K
