O.K...so I get home today and there's this refrigerator size box on my doorstep....I get inside, I stuff various noise stoppers in the kids mouths, nod and mumble at the wife, and get into the peanut stuffed box....lurking inside was my converted Hayseed 30

This amp done up in black and blusbreaker sitting on top of the matching Swanson mini slant 2x12 is just pure sex...still running it into the Bogner 2x12 w/ greenbacks, I'll have a Weber alnico Blue Dog / Silver Bell combo loaded into the Swanson next week. The amp sounds insane. Period. I'll comment more on the tone changes after I play it some more and get the alnicos in the Swanson.

Now for my issue with Rob and Valvetech customer service. Simply put, he and his wife have pretty much ruined it for everybody else. You couldn't ask for a nicer, more thoughtful, just completely on it operation. Rob took my amp that I bought used - went through it and completely upgraded it to current specs, undid a mod and reworked another, built just a bad ass headshell that is flawless, and was just the coolest dude in the world to work with. His wife was even gracious enough to thank me for "understanding" that they couldn't talk because I called in the middle of the footballgame and it was 3rd and long, their team had the ball, and she just had to get back to the game :D

I just want to say a HUGE thanks to Rob, it's really rare to experience this type of service. He truly cares only about this customers and his products and wants to make sure everything out there with his name on it is running perfect. Mine was one of the first ones he built.

And this setup looks just insane :dude :AOK :dude

Extremely attractive amp, V-Fly. Love the grill cloth and the head is so solid looking. Beauty.

That is a damn nice looking amp. I might need to get a headshell for mine.

Thanks man, I think it looks killer myself :p

As far as what was done to the amp, and Rob hopefully will chime in to confirm, the jumpered channels were undone, the bright function was moved to a toggle on the back as the pull pots used were a bit on the funky side (new ones are rock solid smooth). The cut knob was brought to his current specs, the tube sockets were all switched out because the first models would only accept JJ tubes. 1/2 power switch was added...The tranny was fixed as it turns out it was nearly ripped from the chassis en route to me ( I thought it was supposed to be elevated....) Also, there was something in there switched out that was a different value than Rob would use - I think it was the whosawhatafrobulator. Anyway, it's right now. So yeah, he went through the amp in a big way. Basically it's been brought up to all current specs but has the addition of the bright switch.

The headshell he built and covered is flawless.

So thats about it I think....the amp sounds killer. I 've got it loaded with all JJ tubes at the moment, although I'm not so sure the ECC83 preamp tubes all the way accross are the way to go. Any suggestions are welcome.

Again, can't say enough about the whole deal and I thank you again for the hookup.

Enjoy it - I can't believe you didn't like the blue sparkle :p

How would you compare the tone before and now that it is updated - did he do the woden mod?

Oh man, it wasn't that I didn't like the blue sparkle, it just didn't match anything I own, play or wear :D Blue Sparkle will ride again though, trust me...

As far as tone, it sounds just awesome still - perhaps a shade darker with the JJ ECC83 preamp tubes...I'll switch them out back to the Sovteks that were in there. The bright switch isn't hooked up to the top boost side anymore - thats fine though, that channel kicks major ass without it already. As far as the woden thing goes, I think thats what Rob did to it. The real test for all of this will be when I get the Swanson loaded with the alnicos next week...it's already stellar, the alnicos will be the icing on the cake.

Please tell me you didn't call an Indiana guy during the Colts playoff game. That's about like interrupting when Mellencamp is on live TV. :D

Coolness! Sorry about the tranny - I think I had it supported but IIRC it looked a bit lopsided when I got it - I've seen that on several amps I've received through UPS/FEDEX hence why I try to support the trannies when I ship.

Anyhow glad you're loving it! So, what's the new amp you're gassing for in the post above? Spill Bro!

Yep, that'll be my project for today. Removing my VAC chassis from the old head shell, boxing it up and sending it off to Rob for a do-over. I have one of his earliest heads and I think the measurements are different, plus there's no logo. You can see he's made huge strides in his cabinet covering work. I have a 50-watter like Teefus' done up in blonde that really looks great.

Re - gassing on another Aiken Sabre...never should've sold #0002...but I'm kind of over it now. I'm happy with the Aiken Intruder, and the Hayseed is just killer...I'm going to pass....The Hayseed is going along way towards curing the amp jones.

My alnicos will be here end of the week for the Swanson.

My most raging ADD Gas attack lately has involved Les Pauls, and those of the Historic variety if I take the plunge....

The Hayseed needs a Burst :dude

So I got ahold of a pair of Weber alnicos, Blue Dog and Silver Bell, loaded them into the Swanson and played away for an hour or two. The amp sounded just incredible and I could tell that the Weber's were the right call. Still, something was missing .

The answer was to remove the back of the cab. Everybody who said the alnico's work best in an open cab was spot on. Tone quality improved by 100%. Just an incredible airy sparkle that makes you grin when playing. I'm using this as my clean rig, the edge of breakup tones are cool but the cleans are whats doing it for me now.

Awesome killer setup. Between this and the Aiken Intruder I'm set. No amp GAS at the moment (subject to change of course.)
