I'm looking to buy a good heavy metal amp that would sound good at bedroom level, band practice, and be gig-able. Im looking for something that would be good at thrash such as old school metallica and slayer. I had a 6505 combo but i actually ended up not liking it as much as i thought i would. Any suggestions ?

Peavey 5150 (although if you didn't like your 6505...), Crate Blue Voodoo, Blackstar stuff is pretty nice. Older Laney heads are awesome, but loud as hell and need a pedal to get them really ripping, similar to a jcm800.

Can you give a bit more info to go on? I love great metal OD tone myself but I'm not huge fan of the 6505 either,

Do you care if it SS or Tube? If your set on tube and could swing $600ish you might dig something like a Dark Terror. I got one just to tinker with when I didn't want to carry around a "real" head and ended up being blown away...

Used 5150/6505 head and a cheap marshall cab. I know you didn't like the combo but in my experience it's the stock speakers that make it sound naff.
