I vote for the R4. I have two of them, and Cloud 9 in Brockburst and a Black Beauty. Great Blues guitars, both of them. The burst R4 with the wraparound bridge really, really sounds nice.

I had a Black Beauty '54 Historic with the Alnico V/p90 combo. Great great guitar that I regret selling. Not for the meek however--tough to find one under 10 lbs...here's one that didn't sell but I'm sure with patience you will be able to find one under $18-1900 shipped.

Gibson ended production on this model so odds are it will not sink any in value.

I'd go with either a Heritage H137 or a Koll Junior Glide, both of which would be under your budget. The Hamer Junior is a good option, especially if you buy used.

I have a Gibson Historic R4 and a Lentz dual P90 guitar. Both are great guitars, but if I had to keep one it would be the Lentz. Both guitars are in the same price range, in fact I think the Lentz was $50 dollars cheaper.

I am a huge P-90 fan. I vote for the Gibson LP Junior first. I feel they truly nail the P-90 sound. I wld also suggest looking at the Gibson '56 reissues as they are excellent as well.

Funny, I have one of each for sale as well (they are duplicates of course) :)

+1 for the Hamer Korina Jr. It's my favorite guitar. Well below your price range if purchased used.

Try the faded DC les pauls. I bought one and have been very pleased at what you get for the modest price. Screaming good sound and easy to play.

The 90's single cut Gibson LP Special with P90's (discontinued) is a good deal (under 1K) for a quality P90 guitar...not exactly vintage correct with a stop bar and TOM, but it is a great guitar for the money.

Gibson is still making the 54 custom reissue LP. It is now considered a limited model.

There is always the SG Classic. It's the real deal and at a reasonable price. I can't say enough good things about mine as it has quickly become a favorite guitar to play.
