I'm going to have my first custom build done soon, and I'm looking for ideas on fretboard inlays, no dots, no LP standard type inlays, just looking for ideas of something not super extravagant but still classy. Thanks guys!

How many frets are you getting? 21? 22? 24?

IMO The 12th fret should be the focal point... I always like designs that point the way up to the 12th or 24th frets.

Also no fret markers are as classy as it gets. IMO.

The guy who did these [bruceweiart] has a bunch of other really beautiful inlay work as well... these to me are killer tho.

I'm likely having Dave McNaught build me a Vintage Singlecut with 22 frets. Cool ideas so far! Thanks and keep them coming!

Agreed - if you want classy, that's your answer.

Not exactly classy but I think crop circles look so cool.

Those designs are awesome, but for practicality, Roman numerals are cool. I like the Celtic crosses Warmoth offers.

I've always liked Collings stacked parallelogram inlays

B.C. Rich style diamond or cloud inlays look cool.

What is the rest of the build like?

I am a big fan of minimal inlays, such as small dots on upper side of fingerboard, or even no inlays looks great to me. But I don't thinks this fits all build designs.

Do you want something subtle or something flashy?

I've liked a lot of the fancy inlays but some are just overkill, not wanting half the wood gone on the board. Going with a nice quilt top I think. Not as subtle as dots, nowhere near as involved as a moonscape or something....

The old Epi split rectangles are kind of nice. Gretsch thumbnails are cool, too.

Side dots only. The Gretsch markers are second to me.
