For those of you not aware there is a developing issue that the finish on the Murphy Lab Gibson guitars is defective and starting to flake off. This is not just a mild effect but will eventually cause large areas of the finish to come off.

Gibson dealers have been quietly taking these guitars back but some are still selling the defective guitars and now some owners are trying to dump these guitars on the used market to unsuspecting buyers.

Would you be willing to support an outreach to Gibson to officially deal with this issue.

Please email [email protected] and say you want the Murphy Lab defective guitars officially recalled.

If you can help with this by simply sending an email you can show that this forum can make a difference.

Boycott Gibson until they do what is right.

If they are taking them back it sounds like they are officially dealing with it. How about we let the people with issues deal directly with the manufacturer and dealers and the rest of us stay out of it. Man...some people just want to watch the world burn.

Are you saying that people who are spending $5K+ on guitars can't get Gibson's attention?

Gibson's inconsistent quality is one thing, but they've always had a pretty good idea of how to chase the dollar. Are they not taking the guitars back?

If you return a guitar and the store chooses to re-sell it, there’s really not much you can do about that.

It’s cool that you’re trying to look out for people but beyond publicizing the issue, you can’t control their behavior.

If I can stir up some **** maybe Gibson will actually pull the reset of the defects off the shelves instead of trying to dump them on unsuspecting buyers. If you want to help with that then thanks. But even just posting about it here helps get their attention so thanks for all the replies good and bad...keep them coming.

My opinion

Gibson already got paid, unless things have changed. The dealers always had to pre-buy their stock. A boycott would hurt the dealers which would potentially put them out of business, and further reduce my options to buy any type of music gear from any manufacturer.

I don't own and will never own a ML guitar, and am very happy with the quality of the Gibsons I do own. Why should I complain to Gibson?

An unknown number of people I have never met had a problem with a guitar. They were made whole by the dealers and, allegedly, Murphy Labs have tracked down and fixed the source of the problem. This ML mea culpa and fix is alledged in other threads by the OP of this thread who also says he has been refunded by multiple dealers for multiple guitars.

Some dealers choose to be shady about reselling used ML guitars as new.
In my experience, This happens with non ML and non Gibson, and even non guitar gear at these dealers too.

Why should I be clutching my pearls? Oh yeah, 1% problems.

It's hard for me to complain about something I haven't seen. My understanding is the Murphy Lab finishes are suppose to look, well, old and worn. That's what people want a guitar that looks played and worn in. Even the pleb models have nitro finish and will wear over time too, if you play them. Maybe a non-Murphy custom shop is a better option for people who have these concerns. Keep it on a wall or in the case?
