Hi, I'm new. Just had a question about two kinds of pedals...

I'm looking at adding a chorus pedal and a compressor pedal.

Was looking at this:

Or possibly the Barber Tone Press. But I like the boost feather of the Strymon.

I have no idea when it comes to chorus.

My main purpose is to use these pedals to fatten the mix up a bit since we're a one guitar band. Any recommendations/offers are greatly appreciated. :D

Oh, and my current set up is: Les Paul Studio > Line6 X2 > Tuner > Metal Muff > DOD Flange > MXR Analog CC > Marshall 1/2Stack

I play basically straight forward dance/party cliche rock. A little punk influence, but definitely a touch of electronica.

Definitely not looking for chicken pickin' or anything like that. A nice sustain for the clean, and fatter individual notes...

it isnt boutique fancy, but there is a digitech hardwire chorus - CR7 - for sale in the emporium now that is a steal at $85 ... i have the non-hardwire version that i like very much (very quiet and highly versatile) and this one has the same dsp engine plus is true bypass ... highly recommend the unit

For compressor sounds like you have two very good options:
Strymon and Diamond. Both do the opto-compression and come from very well regarded, high pedigree builders. I have the Diamond, but I have to run it at 24V to avoid my hot humbuckers from getting it to squash before I want it to (never).

For chorus you are spoiled for choice. The strymon sounds awesome, but there are also other options at that price point:
* Hardwire, much cheaper but good.
* Visual Sound H2O with delay built in. Awesome pedal.
* Damage Control Glass Nexus if you are fortunate enough to find one, just get it.

What is you target pricepoint for the chorus as well as the compressor?

The VS H2O is for sale right now on my local CL. $120 good condition.

Is that a good deal?

Yes that is a very good price. You get two pedals in one.

But just in case, go down to your local GC and try the pedals. I think they carry Diamond and Visual Sound stuff, so you should be able to see if those pedals are to your liking.

Just gonna throw in my two cents here: If you're using a tube amp, particularly with the metal muff, you're probably getting enough compression as is. Plus, being the only guitar in a 3 piece band, you're probably not having trouble staying in the mix/preventing yourself from overpowering the mix (something a good subtle comp, like the Strymon or Diamond, do well).

As a self-described newb, why do you want compression?

If you really want to fatten up the mix, simple as using a stereo detune/chorus signal like the Boss DC-2!

Course, you will need to drag another amp to the gig :D Hell, even using it mono would work. The DC-2 has tone like no other. If you can't find a DC-2, try the Boss CE-20. It has a great DC-2 modelling setting

Appreciate the advice...

I guess I want compression because with our style, I go from playing full chords in a chorus down to two strings for verses. I thought compression might help bring up those times when I'm down to a string or two, along with a chorus to fill some space. Maybe I'm wrong?

we are not metal, I just happen to like the metal muff (though I never use the top boost)

Hey, lot of love for the Metal Muff around here and precious few are metal players. No pigeonholing going on here

What you described is what a good compressor does. Try either the Strymon or Diamond (or both) in your band. The Diamond was my first compressor and it totally blew me away..... I can't play live without it. I'm sure you'll love it, just make sure you NEED it. If you're fighting with your sound levels like you say you are, you might just need one :)

A very lush but subtle chorus, could fit your situation nicely.

Not pricey either especially used. Picked mine up here for around $75 or so a while back.

Another vote for the Diamond Compressor though I'm very interested in what Strymon has been putting out lately. So much so in fact I may build an entire Strymon based board, if I can find the cash & or deals at the right time, place & price. :)

Good Luck~!
