I don't think they were aiming for Gone With The Wind or Casablanca.

I saw the first one, I didn’t think it had much plot but it was definitely good action. Keanu is doing good these days, just last night I saw a trailer for a video game he is in, which is basically John Wick in the future. He’s at the end of this trailer.

Love the entire John Wick universe; IMHO Keanu has raised the bar for action movie stars to a new level of awesomeness.

    Compared to Hong Kong cinema?

Dunno, foreign films are much more your thing than mine. What little I have seen of Hong Kong cinema has been fairly generic action genre stuff - Jackie Chan, John Woo and the like. Fun to watch, but IMHO awkwardly choreographed/edited and not very realistic. I'm sure there are better films that I haven't seen yet, if you have any specific recommendations I'd love to check them out sometime.

To me, Keanu's commitment to improving his weapons skills through numerous live-fire training sessions with Taran and his seriously getting into 3 gun competition is raising the bar substantially from films & TV I've seen in the past. His shooting, reloading and handling of firearms is just spot-on and either consistent with or an improvement upon the firearms training I've received. As a result, I don't think that directors and actors are really able to BS their way through shooting scenes anymore - action movie fans are learning to expect more realism now. IIRC, aside from Tom Cruise's standout work in "Collateral", none of the movies and shows I've seen had that level of realism before Wick came out. Just my $0.02, YMMV. :)

"Realism" is not the first word that would spring to my mind to describe the John Wick films.

Obviously it's a fantasy fiction film, so the term "realism" has to be taken in context. My comments were focused on Keanu's handling and shooting of firearms in the John Wick universe.

It must be nice to be the only guy that can hit anything.

The acting, what there was of it, was terrible. Or maybe it was the writing. There was some heavy weight talent there, but it wasn’t used. I guess a paycheck is a paycheck.

Watched the first two and watched the new one just now.

Love these movies... love how surreal and ridiculous they are. I also really enjoy the weird mob universe they're building, with all their rules and traditions.

The action in the last one is some of the best ever, the choreography is insane. Like old Jackie Chan movies.

The second one works as action and farce. The mere idea that the weird ass world of assassins populates every facet of society is hilarious. The knife fight on the subway, with the indifferent New Yorkers exiting post haste, made me laugh out loud.

John Wick is a present-day good-looking, smart and sophisticated version of Groo The Wanderer -- actually the reason why it's so good! ;)
