How do I check a serial number on a Gibson?

I'm new here and I'm sure this question has been covered before, but how do I check what year my Gibson was born?

Any help gratefully reveived:D

Google "Gibson serial number." It's the first link. All the info is on Gibson's website. There's also a site called "guitar dater project" but it sucks and only works for 8 and 9 digit serial numbers.

The serial number will most likely be the answer...if it's a vintage model, and original, you can also verify the pot dates to assist.

What model is it?

Current production LPs, SGs, etc have a serial number on the headstock, which uses the 1st and 5th numbers to date the year...example...

9xxx5xxxx would equal 1995

There are several exceptions to this rule, and the advice about contacting Gibson customer service is the best way to know if you have doubts.
