How long will you keep a guitar you aren't using?

Say you have an axe that is just sitting in the case...doesn't fit the music you're currently playing, you never gig it, whatever the case might be. Is there a point where you sell or trade it just because it's sitting idle?

For my part, I tend to feel guilty about hanging on to gear I'm not using. I'm a player, not a collector.

EDIT to fix my "smart" phone's annoying habit of doubling letters!

I have a Hamer Californian from the late 80s....it has gotten almost no play time the past ten years.

My guitars are all different from each other, so I may not play one of them for months and then come back and binge on it. I keep the ones I really enjoy, and get rid of the ones I don't.

depends on the guitar...I have 3 electrics, of the 3..one of them Ive owned for 21 years, I rarely play it..but I hope I never find myself in the position to ever have to sell it...the other two, I've owned less than 6 months, and I play them frequently, but if I had to, or wanted to....I could let them go...easily...no real attachment to them, other than them being nice guitars

I've got one guitar (Taylor), one amp (Matamp) and several pedals gathering dust, but I love buying (16 guitars, 5 amps and god knows how many pedals) and hate selling.

Other than my first Strat, which I don't play (a '79, not Fender's best), if I don't play a guitar within a year's time, it goes...

I tend to hang on to all of the instrument I acquire, whether I play them much or not. I got my first acoustic in 1982...I still have it [IMG].

I've thinned the heard about as much as I can. Down to the point where each guitar I have has a specific use. One exception is an '83 strat I have owned since new... I need to get it up and running again, always sounded great but hate the trem on it. Doubt I could get much for it though so it stays...

Way too long or forever in most cases. I don't really need three Strats, but every time I think of parting with one it's like that scene in the movie "The Jerk" where Steve Martin says he doesn't need any of his possessions, then keeps trying to grab all of them as he's leaving.

I'm a player not a collector. I have about 10 guitars now....if one doesn't get played in 6 months to a year, it gets sold.

I'm the same way; I practice "serial monogamy" with my guitars, and I practice the "one-in-one-out" rule, anyway. I do plan on keeping my Casino for the long haul, however. I've never bonded with a guitar like this one. But we'll see....

I was just going to post something like this! I have about ten guitars. Put one on consignment at my local shop but took it back.

Is it worse to keep a guitar you don't play or regret selling a guitar?

Yeah not very long. I got rid of a few earlier this year.

I do have an acoustic and a bass guitar I don't play often, but it's definitely worth it to keep those instruments in the arsenal.

I accumulate. I'm not up to "hoarding" status yet. And I'm not a collector.

I don't flip guitars, and as a result, I've got some guitars that were purchased with pin money 40 years ago that are 401K material now. Not all, but enough that at least I have an excuse for the wife <G>.
