How many of you gig w/ low watt amps?

I tried gigging a 64 Deluxe and it was a disaster...for rehersals it was fine but with a 14 piece horn band it was a no go...

my 30watt Fargen Dual Classic has been fine on every gig I have ever done and I was touring with a bandleader who was gigging an 85watt Twin...

I seem to be going in the opposite direction as I am looking for a 35-50watt amp as I want a touch more headroom than the 30watter provides...

What a difference a year makes...my main amp now is a JTM45 with either a 1X12" or 2X12" cab...the 1X12" lowers the volumn enough yet still gives me enough headroom for just about any situation...of course for open-air festivals both cabs. will be on stage...

My 30 watt Fargen has be converted to a 1X12" cab for use as my grab n go amp...I can't gig with less than 30watts and it is not about volumn...it's the headroom...cannot live without it...

I'll be shaking things up soon. Been mainly dealing with my new (old) bass rig. But carry on, I love reading this thread!

I used to gig with my old Pro Jr with an Emi Ramrod. More than loud enough when driven, and had enough clean-ish volume for quieter stuff.

I've found I can crank a 26 watt Victoria Super 2-10 at gigs and it's the perfect volume.

It's loud, but not crazy loud. I always wear in-ears and I can hear it fine through them (around them might be a better way to put it) without destroying my ears.

I prefer to use small watt stuff. My favorite is my Super Champ XD. 15 Watts carries my sound just perfect. Plus we always mic our gear and get a great FOH sound.

I use an Orange ad 30 and it's perfect for large venue gigs with the soundman that wants low stage volume . My Brown Note lite 18 watter works great too ,you can turn it way up to get the saturation you need and still have it sit well in the mix volume wise. I was playing 50 watt amps for a while with the volume on 2 live and the tone sucked . I won't buy an amp over 30 watts these days.

I used a 1482 Silvertone amp at my last gig. Crank it up with a Les Paul, and it is some sweet happiness. Just the right vol without being too loud. I just got a Danelectro Viscount "from my good friend 55junior" which really grinds at slightly less than the Silvertone.
I'm guessing these amps are around 12 watts. :rockin

I gigged for 2 years with a silverface bassman.... Sounded great, but I did not care for clean tones, I always had my overdrive on. I did like the volume of the amp, but not so much all htat headroom till I got the tone to a sweet spot. Especially playing the slightly overdriven rock I play.
Picked upa Dr Z Carmen Ghia, gets more or less the same volume I got with my bassman at 5, but natural breakup, where by my bassman was dead clean.
I understand with certain music you want the power of a 4 by 12 cab behind you, but I rarely have that urge..... But as mentioned I do like to be loud, and acheive that with 18 watts

Don't normally like to quote myself but it's fun to chart changes...

What a difference a year and 3 weeks makes...I have just ordered an At Mars Filmosound Specialist which is about 15watts...whether I can gig with it remains to be seen but after listening to the clips I think that I won't have a problem being able to do that...

I have been gigging with a Matchless SC 30 for quite a few years. I have it set on 1/2 power (15 class A)
I do mic it and run it just a tad in the monitor . Loves pedals

I'm using my little 5 watt Sphincter through two 12" Hemorrhoids.

The sound is MASSIVE, although it is mic'd. People always comment on my sound. I've burned through a lot of drummers with this little baby!

Thanks you guys. Sorry for being a wise guy.

Rod, I just had to let you know--I bought the Les Paul I use from you back in 1992. I've always remembered you as a really kind-hearted guy. ...and now you're famous! ;)

p.s. to all: TGP is great. I've been lurking here for years...

When I was gigging from 1999 through 2006, I played a ton of gigs with six different versions of the TopHat Club Royale. 18 watts. I also played a couple gigs with a THD Univalve.

Many of the gigs were not miked. However, many of them were in pretty fair size clubs (i.e., 250 - 500 seaters) with nice sound systems (5,000+ watt FOH with 3,000+ watt monitor mix). Even played a couple gigs in front of 1,000+ people with a 1x12 Club Royale miked.

Great controllable tone. And the sound guys loved how easy they were to mix. I never turned any of my CRs up past 1/2 way on stage.

just actually used my new fender 57 deluxe RI last weekend.
WOW! the little bugger was just screaming with my 51 nocaster . the amp sounded like it was on fire.honestly, ive never hear anything like iti usually play through hundred watt soldanos and badcats and marshalls live. i still love them as well, but from now on, all my gigs with a good front end will get the "deluxe" treatment. i must say that this is the first fender i really love for my style. i have had 66 super reverb, vibro king, 75 super reverb, blues jr,
anyway small rich in tone and gorgeous to look at. sounds so good in my bedroom,on the hardwoods.
