The other thread (guitars that defined the 80's) got me to thinking that I want to have a shred guitar around for when I need to scratch that itch. Not even necessarily for shred/metal type of music. I would bust it out for some progressive melodic rock too (think Satriani). I would guess that those types of guitars are the least popular among the TGP crowd.

How many of you keep one (or more) shred or metal type guitars around for fun?

(I know you can play most types of music on any type of guitar, but I also know that you get what I'm talking about when I say "shred or metal" guitars, so let's not go down that road)

Yes, guilty here. I use a Kramer from the 80's when needed.

I had a HH Strat for a while. That was as close as I ever got to a shred-metal guitar.

I have two 1980s Ibanez Rocket Roll II flying Vs that are modded/painted. I never ever get to play them unless I do some crazy solo in the studio, but I can't part with them. They both play amazing and one was my first guitar ever.

Probably more than a few depending what ones considers shred.

Mostly 80/90s Jackson's. EBMM JP6/12. Shecter. EVH Wolfgang (not really shred imo). That sorta thing. Never liked Ibanez really at all, the few I've owned over the years didn't hang around very long.

I bought an Ibanez RG-550 off a friend a few years back. Fun guitar, but I can't play that skinny of a neck for too long.

I have a beat MIJ Fernandes shredder with Floyd, super thin neck like a Wizard and h/s/s configuration. I dug it out a few days ago and it has been about all I've played since. I think I really dig thin necks with flat radii, I just never gave them much of a chance.

This thing could use a pro setup though which will cost more than it's worth probably haha.

I have a MIJ Jackson DK2 and a MIM Charvel Super Stock San Dimas, both can be considered shred/metal guitars I suppose.
