I was in Guitar Center just looking around. In the used gear section there was Mesa Boogie head that didn't have a back cover. I counted 9 power tubes and I think 8 preamp tubes. WTF????

They have the used amps staged back to back and there was a guy trying a amp in front of the Mesa and he was sitting right in front of the Mesa so I didn't see what model it was.

Who buys an amp with that many tubes? It must cost a fortune to retube that thing.

You sure it wasn't a Mark III Colisseum? That would have 6 power tubes and 7? preamp tubes.

A Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier has 6 Power Tubes and 3 Rectifier Tubes
    but only 5 Preamp Tubes.

I'm guessing it was a Road King. It has both 6l6 and el34 power tubes, rectifier tubes, and a crap load of preamp tubes.

That looks like it, the big tubes went all the way across like that and I couldn't see the preamp tubes.

That's only one more tube than my Guytron GT-100 F/V.

Why is this a weird thing? If you want lots of power and multiple channels with entirely tube driven high gain you're gonna need a bunch of tubes.

My buddy toured with a Mesa 400+ for a few years. That is a KILLER bass amp.

400+ may sound fine, but with modern production tubes, do not want the hassle of 12 power tubes.

The bassist in my first band had a 400+. That thing had twelve 6L6's and weighed close to a metric ton. I hated carrying that thing to shows.

An old Ampeg SVT head has a lot of tubes and weight a metric ton as well! It's no wonder that so many bassists have adopted solid-state heads

I think you are right. Most tubes I've ever seen in an amp.
