What is an effective way (by that I mean which effects, settings etc) to get the shimmering sounds Edge pulls out of his effects?

AC30, as loud as you can get it without distorting.

Plectrums as already suggested, held backwards to you pluck with the dimpled finger grip end.

Leave space for the notes to ring out and be heard.

Just wanted to jump in here and say again how important the pick thing is. I was a doubter until I tried it myself...HUGE DIFFERENCE. I think Dunlop makes some with the dimpled fat ends, and when you scrape that puppy across the strings just right, you get that famous clang and chirp.

modulated delay, herdim picks held so the dimpled end scratches the string, a vox like amp...thats the bASICS,,,

If I use a strat, through a vox simulator, with modulated delay, and regular picks it does not even come close...those picks, the modulated delay, and a vox like amp are the crucial ingredients

yeah you have to have the picks, i have dunlops with the nurled and i would play around with them before i even realized that what he was doing. but the shimmer is not just a single modulated digi delay as was mentioned. the picks will get you that "chicka chicka" like stuff ala "streets

this thread seems worthless so far.
it seems like the OP wants a shimmer/crystal sound, not just the delay sound.

    checkout this thread:

watch the videos and stuff- i think it does a great job explaining that shimmer sound.

I dunno, I think "shimmering" could be interpreted in a few ways as demonstrated here - I think a clean and chimey ac30 with the raspy pick attack and delay is a shimmery sound. The actual reverb/organ/pitch shift guitar sound we call shimmer is an awesome sound, but it's not like the edge uses it in a lot of u2 songs.
