I have finally figured out that if I could easily record stuff, I could get a lot better at playing. Maybe even lay down something I could listen to.

I see Pro Tools etc out there but I am not sure ......

What is the best thing to get started with - not junk, but not $10k either?

Well if you really want to, id go for a good used stand alone unit..Even the Korg or tascam pocket studios...I havent used them but ive heard great stuff about em..There like mini PODs as they also have amp sims and stuff like that too...Id definitly check them out, and they can be had on ebay for not to much at all..
