You got the I-Ching, baby, but the wrong yo-yo.

(At least that's what it sounds like Carl Perkins is singing on my scratchy old 78....)

I know on Sgt. Pepper's they ran a ching of tone direct to the board ("Say Ringo, go fetch the Chingo...")
IIRC, George got it in a trade with Ravi Shankar for a klon.

Was that when they hired the baby sitar to look after Julian Lennon?
    (I don't believe I just posted that...)

Just watched the truefire vid - the patterns can actually make more sense than Van Eps' system. The one Bach (and Ben Monder) uses is in there - where you're skipping the D and G strings. So a Dm7b5 chord would be D and F on the low E and A strings - and the Ab and C would be on the high B and E strings... double-double drop something?.... some good dim7 voicings like this in the chorales.

I remember Pat talking about getting ideas from street signs/license plates etc. where:

    154 E.72nd st

    would be an E9sus (15472 = EBADF#)

Steve Allen used to do a routine as the host on the Tonight show in the 50s -- taking phone numbers, turning them into melodies, then playing OK cocktail piano with them. I remember Thelonious Monk was a guest once. Steve didn't understand what Monk was doing, and was very patronizing during the interview. It may be on youtube somewhere -- cringeworthy....

As in, he didn't get that he was in the presence of a genius?

That would be cringeworthy, as I'd always thought Steve Allen was pretty cool as far as talk show hosts go...

There's a recording of it, can't seem to find it on youtube - and the CD it was released on didn't get absorbed into the Thelonius Monk spotify collection.

Date of the Tonight Show appearance was 6-10-1955

Here's Teo Macero talking about Monk and Mingus doing the Steve Alllen Show. The story is near the end of the video.

    Same gig?

    It's binary. 2^6 = 64.

You know there are only 10 types of people: those who understand binary and those who don't

Wow Teo is great! Yeah that's the one, but he's editing what happened... prob to keep things light. Love the image of Monk chasing Steve Allen through the studio for cheating him out of $

Steve's tone was sort of "...oh, so you're the savant who everyone thinks is better than George Shearing?... well then, let's see what you can do.... now are you sure you know what you're playing?..." etc.
