I bought a bone stock Ibanez TS9 with absolutely zero intent to mod it or to have it modded for me.

    And I quite like it.

Some of my favorite features of this pedal....

    Buffered bypass
    Insane mid-hump
    Non-transparent
    It's not "boutique"
    It sounds flippin' good

Stock TS9 here, as well. Love it. I also love Peanut Butter and Marshmallow sandwiches. So.... who knows, man.

I have a few pedals more exotic than my TS9DX, but I use the TS9 stock as my gigging OD. It gets me exactly what I need for a practical use: a solo boost. Now, the TS9 has four modes, but it's un-modded and in factory condition.

A big plus is that if someone steals it from a gig or it breaks, it's easily replaceable. Can't say that about some of the more expensive or rare pedals commonly used at TGP.

I have a stock TS9 and I really like it!

I also have a stock SD-1, but I really need my friend to mod it I think...so I think I will get him to do so haha

I've been using a stock TS-808 for years. It seems like I've been through every boutique overdrive but the 808 always seems to find its way back to my board. Something about it just works.

An amazing amount of awesome music was made with that crappy stock pedal. Go figure.

I have one of those. It's probably worth about $15, but it sounds amazing.

I had a stock TS-9 on my board and had no intentions of modding it. Same thing goes for my SD-1

I think I have figured out why. I had for a good long time sworn that I hated tube screamers. And then I actually tried one. I'm still not as keen on the 808, but the 9 hit the spot for me. It is exactly the sound I've had in my head. No need for further exploration. Which I will probably do anyways — nature of the beast.

Most of what I've seen bantered about here revolves around the "best" Analogman/Keeley mods, or what other boutique reincarnations are the "best." And I'm not the kind of guy to say that what's right for me should be the universal rule, but I am growing tired of overlooking the simple answers in favor of far more expensive answers that no better solve the problem.

Take two pedals, an SD-1 and a modded SD-1. Play the SD-1 by itself. Sounds great. Do an A/B shootout with the modded one, modded one sounds noticeably better.

The stock SD-1 still sounds great and it always did. Fact is, when making music, the comparative difference between the two pedals doesn't actually matter.

SColfax's Law: Differences in pedal tone only matter while you are making the comparisons.
