Boy, that is a ballsy amp! It's has some kind of lower rpm growl that will rip your head off if you let it! It's very touch sensitive, much like a Vox type amp. I didn't have time to play it very much, so I just plugged into the nearest cab laying around which was an Orange 1x12 with a vintage purple speaker. If this amp sounds that good through a measly 1x12, I can't wait until I can crank it through a proper cab with some Celestions! :bow

I have the feeling there isn't much headroom with the amp.... I was using a LP Junior with a P90 and it was getting crunchy pretty quick.... but then the Superlead (which it kind of mimicks) wasn't exactly a real clean amp either!

Congrats on the new Z. Reading the Z forum, it seems some there find that an attenuator is essential to play it at the volume it needs for the sweet spot. did you think it needed to be THAT loud? Thanks.

Congrats Tweedy, should have quite a bit of headroom. It was your P-90 breaking up, try a Tele or Strat. Welcome to the Z club!

I don't think it needs an attenuator. I won't be using one.
That doesn't mean someone else might not need one though

Ive been trying to figure out the best way to do a dr Z search here..but it always gives me that "too common..too short..." message... I was gonna post about it just now and stumbled across this post...

Through the 1x12 cab, it was fairly loud, but man ! it sounded so good and it wasn't so loud that I felt I had to squash the tone with an attenuator. The 1/2 power works pretty well as far as chopping the volume down... the tone isn't quite as dynamic and transparent, but it still sounds good.

The amp I played at a guitar show recently was pretty loud even through an attenuator, but that was through a 4-12 cab.

I'll probably do a demo of some type this weekend. This is easily the best Z amp I've owned.... it's surprising that it sounds so good. It must be something to do with those 6V6 tubes!

Dr Z Remedy?

Great amp. Works well with 112, 210, 212, etc. etc. etc.; and equally well with 'buckers and single coils imho.

Congrats :)

cheers always, eh

I don't agree with that at all. With P90's or humbuckers, it can break up pretty quick, yet clean up nicely if you lighten up the attack a bit.

And I firmly believe the half-power switch is the best anywhere. I notice very little difference in tone, as opposed to the pentode/triode switch on my Galaxie, which I more or less never use.
