Hey, language Nazis, what's up with this recent little gem of popular expression? It's been around a while but it seems to be gaining traction.

The first time someone said "I know, right?" to me I thought, "Right about what?" I got that the person was agreeing with what I'd just said. But what's that interrogative "right" about? It sounds pretty strange.

Are you questioning whether you really mean what you just said? Asking to be affirmed in your affirmation? Asking if the other person understands, like the obnoxious folks who can't say anything without adding "Know what I'm saying?" to it? Or are you just asking to be congratulated on agreeing?

Sure, this is trivial stuff, but I figured that the language and grammar Nazis who hang out here might have some insights.

"right?" seems to be following many statements made by people today, right?

It's like were at a time where people feel the need of "buy in" or "acknowledgement" from who they associate with, right?

This is very similar to what I've noticed in recent years; most 20-30 year olds I meet often end their spoken sentences with their voice going up, as if statements are questions.

As an eternal foreigner, the first time I heard "I know, right," said by the secretary where I work, I actually liked it. It seemed like a catchy American expression, rather like "Bob's your uncle," in England.

It's just a colloquial and fashionable shortening of "I know! It's crazy (or some other descriptive term), right?"

    Really, really easy to understand.
