I've decided to go the route of just assembling a tele.

Can someone help me compile a checklist?

- body
- neck
- tuners
- pups
- pots
- wiring

what else? I've also heard of people buying necks and bodies that don't fit each other? What do I need to look for?

strap buttons? pickguard? knobs? Bridge? I would buy from someone reputable like warmoth who have a Fender license

Here's my thinline I built from them:

Some necks won't come with a nut and some will have to be replaced. So you might want to add a Nut to your list. If it's a string through you will need ferrules (sp?)

ETA: I didn't see a switch in any of the lists.

adding to what others have mentioned:

string ferrules, string tree(s), control plate, jack cup (I definitely recommend an Electrosocket, not a vintage style Jack plate), and the jack itself.

Starting top down:
Neck:
1:Tuning keys
2:String trees
3:Nut installation
4:Neck plate
5:Neck mounting screws
Body:
6:pickguard
7:pickguard mounting screws
8:Neck Pickup
9:Bridge pickup
10:Bridge assembly
11:Control plate
12: Control plate screws
13:3 way tele style switch (should come with switch tip)
14:2 appropriate potentiometers
15:appropriate capacitor for tone pot
16:Wire for wiring
17:Input jack
18:Jack ferrule or jack plate
19:Screws for jack plate if appropriate
20: Strap buttons or straplock system
21:string ferrules for the back of the guitar if appropriate (some bridges are top loaders)
22:knobs for the potentiometers

I think thats all of it.

So, here is what I do:
1. neck - order from USACG (I have everything drop shipped to my builder, Rhomco Guitars in Crowley Texas)
2. body - USACG
3. Tele Kit - Callaham Guitars (the entire enchilada, including pickguard if you want what they offer)
4. pickguard from Pickguardian.com if not
5. pickups - Don Mare or Zhangbucker, drop shipped etc.
6. Case - drop shipped as well.

I think a strap and a nut and that's about it. How simple is that?

Get neck and body from same company, I would suggest USACustomGuitars. I do not see a 12 pack of beer and an MP3 player full of great tunes.
