I opened a guitar store a few weeks ago, not going to link or anything because that would be pretty tasteless, but let me just say the temptation to order a private stock PRS 7 with a flatter radius has never been higher :D

Also, I think you guys would be shocked at how many guitars we have to send back in general. I don't run the day to day as the store is run out of Chicago but from what I've heard, we're basically QC for some brands.

One of the well-known Rickenbacker dealers, Pick of the Ricks, seems to be a QC center for Rickenbacker products.

Right across the street from 3345 North Lincoln Avenue would be a pretty good location.

Years ago my best friend from home was opening a studio and invited me to move back and partner with him. I would be the guitar/amps guy and he would do the recording/production. Alas, the road not traveled.

Good luck with the store! we certainly need more mom & pops. Not surprised about the QC issues..i once pulled a new SG off the rack and found the fret ends were sharp enough to cut. the dude helping me said "they'll wear down".

I can see the QC thing, I'm experienced. Best Wishes with the new store.

We're online only as we exist to primarily serve our own community, which is basically TGP if it was made up of 20-30 year olds playing metal primarily. We carry PRS, Thorn, Ibanez, Schecter, Jackson, etc... We are one of the few guys authorized to do online only for prs and ibby too which is awesome.

Quality control. Just to give you an idea, we ended up returning 40%+ of the guitars we received from a specific brand.

As tempting as it is, I think it would be breaking the rules.

That's unrelated and not us. Jaya is an awesome guy though!

Yeah that's totally unacceptable. We're lucky to be well capitalized as our other companies are feeding this one until it gets rolling, so we can throw out a lot of the trash.

Ha! I was car shopping a while ago and told the salesman "this one has everything I want, but I'm not crazy about the color" and he looks at me with a straight face and says "don't worry sir, it'll fade in the sun." :facepalm

I would've replied "but I'll only be driving at night and keep it in the garage during the day!"

PS - congrats on the store, OP and best of luck.

    Hey good luck man!

I opened a music store myself last year. We don't carry much in the way of instruments (yet), focusing mostly on lessons, accessories and also string instrument repairs. Happy to still be open a year later, but many unforeseen changes happened to the business along the way. It has been both one of the most stressful and rewarding experiences of my life! Pretty interesting to see firsthand what the profit margins are like on the retail side, especially how inconsistent those percentages are from item to item...

recently I had been traveling and went in several guitar shops in Oklahoma, Idaho, Oregon, Utah and New Mexico.
in 4 shops I went to there were new Fender Bassbreaker amps, and all of them I was told by individual store management "oh we have to send that back to Fender, it does not work right" Now I can see one or maybe two stores having an issue but running into 4 of the same problem, that aint right and when I was in the market for a new amp I looked at all the Fender offerings that are made in that same Ensenada Mexico plant, 68 silverface reissues, the new Bassbreaker series, all have chassis QC issues, that cost Fender a sale to me.

Good luck. I'd imagine an guitar store is, statistically, a risky business. But if you're in VC...you're used to it.

We own a very large online guitar community so it was natural for us.

I'm guessing that 40% is either Schecter or Jackson.
