Gents, I was talking to a co-worker earlier in the week who, like nearly every single one of us, suffers from GAS. We joked about it and led me to come up with a simple mathematical equation for GAS, which I present for your consideration :):

Please explain next gear acquisition. Is that gear already purchased but not yet delivered or something else?

You have done us all a great service.

Now you've gone and done it. You've exposed corporate America's scheme to empty everyone's wallet. You'd better plan to take the next flight to Moscow before they make you disappear.

Flaw: You failed to take into consideration Gd, which is the desire to own another guitar, which is ALWAYS Gn + 1 under all conditions.

    ;)

    Yep, agreed.

If he's lucky he can bunk up with Ed Snowden.

    Does Ed play guitar? :huh

Ok. I worked it under several scenarios and the answer is always "Buy it." It's perfect! Gibson should buy the rights and set up an interactive GAS game at every guitar center.

What kind of calculus equation determines the Xn as it relates to items en route, on waiting lists, and listed on various for sales sites.

The Wife Acceptance Factor, no matter how large, may diminish the GAS, but never truly eliminate it, right? 'Honey, I like all the stuff you have now. Isn't that enough?'

Unless WAF reaches a negative number, in which case GAS reverses itself and you must begin divesting assets, otherwise known as 'thinning the herd.'

Note that you can never divide by zero, because the wife will never lack for either a positive or negative opinion.

Someone actually took a stab at GAS, that's pretty cool.
As an Engineer, I think I would take the equation to another level if we want to keep going at this:
    1. A subtractor, Yn, in the equation for trading in some gear after purchasing new gear, so the summation should give net gear owned.
    2. For cases with non-wife, need to cover this scenario.
    3. Acquisition probability factor should be included: We get GAS and sometimes we can fight it off. Add this factor.

I like it. Thank God no integrals or derivatives!!! I knew it couldn't be THAT complicated...

I thought it was a lot more simple.

X = the perfect number of guitars to own
N = the number of guitars you currently own

    X = N+1
