I've got a mate who plays lizard-spew-green strat knockoff, and now he's put an awful clashing red/brown pick-guard on it. I think it's his shtick to show up with a guitar that looks like a piece of garbage and then rock the hell out of it.

I think ugly is the new relic'd.

Everybody has their preferences. I think most Gibson and G style guitars are unattractive, same goes for PRS.

Fancy looking, ornate, flame-topped, gold hardware guitars are ugly to me, so I get it ;)

Somethin' about a raw look attracts me, I love the Gibson LPJs and stock non-burst Teles etc.
On the other hand, I get a total hard on for Gretschs. I love the big hollow bodies, with Bigsby and all.. some of 'em are too over the top with all the sparkly **** but I mean, they're great looking guitars, and they do look a little bit fancy (anyone up for Maccas?).

..there are a load of burst guitars I think look cool, loads with gold hardware I think look great, etc etc, just depends on the guitar I suppose.
I usually prefer plain and simple but not every time.

Ugly guitars to me are pointy shredder guitars, BC rich.. Flying Vs.. Ibanez shredders etc etc all that **** is ugly as hell to me and doesn't attract or interest me.
The EVH things I see up for sale every other day are disgusting.

I generally like plain classic looks. Only certain colors in certain guitars (love Daphne Blue on Strats- looks tacky as **** on Tele's for example). I don't like quilted maple, crazy flame or tiger stripe, bling or Ornamentation. I hate Tyler head stocks with a passion. They ruin otherwise great looking guitars.

I love PRS guitars. PRS also makes some of the ugliest guitars I've ever seen.

But again, it's kind of each guitar on its own merits. There is no brand that is a worse offender tha others.

That can be fun. I had a badly measured nailed together 1x12 cab made from hurricane rubble plywood that people would laugh at until they heard it. I used to enjoy that. Me and a friend built it while the power was still out, for something to do. Hand saw, hammer, nails. Still have it somewhere.

I would never use an instrument like that but for him it was perfect. Maybe the instrument has to fit the personality of a player more than being just beautiful

He sounded awesome with that thing. Kinda puts a massive question mark over the whole tonewood argument, doesn't it.

See, to me it looks not only ugly, but totally ridiculous. Now, the telecasters are a different story . . .

This pretty much sums it up for me. For electrics and acoustics I like it plain and traditional: LPs, Teles in particular. I don't even like cutaways on acoustics. I think why the Gretschs and similar Gibsons work for me, despite having a lot of bling, is that they still look traditional because they were always that way.

It's not ridiculous, it's just Prince. Anyone else would look ridiculous with that axe, but he had a unique and strangely brilliant fashion sense. He knew what would work for him. The purple actually looks great against that light blue and goldenrod outfit he's wearing.
