Rolling Acres in Akron Ohio .... it was the coolest mall around in the 70s, 80s, and 90s..... and then something went wrong! Something went very, VERY wrong!!

Looks like one of the other stores is having a tire sale :confused

The place has pretty much been destroyed since it closed doors in 2008, but there are a few YouTube videos from around 2009 that shows it to be in fairly original condition. Now it is completely destroyed inside and it's the spookiest, creepiest place you can image. Let's start with the movie theater, shall we? :knitting

To me, this is more scary than the most scary movie I've ever seen  A church mouse is obnoxiously loud in a place like this!

Here is where they make popcorn, but they didn't have it cranked up yet. :red

So the theater leads out to the mall. Looks like a total freak fest :eeks

Here is one of the coolest things about this mall, the central hub escalators and the busted glass elevator.

This here a dangerous place to be!!! especially if you don't have the proper handicap hang tag :waiting

 It's sad to see all that design and work crash and burn after only 30 or 40 years.

    Good story.
I always hated malls. Still do.

Are those new photos you shot? It's really deteriorated from the last set I saw from there.

My wife and I lived in Akron from 9/91 until 2/94; I remember Rolling Acres as still being a hopping place then, particularly during Decembers.

In Thailand abandoned buildings became a huge problem after the 1997 financial plummet. Folks were jumping off of overpass bridges in front of 18 wheelers to end it all.
Then they realized they could just climb to the top of a 12 story condo that was unfinished & end it all that way!

Here's one they named Ghost Tower, because so many people plummeted to their death, before someone finally hired some folks to seal up the stairwells.

Coincidentally, one of the abandoned towers in Pattaya became a disco for a while, but today is just abandoned again. It was called Batman:

Gotta say ... those places are kinda creepy. It's hard to fathom the series of events that could lead to such abandonment, aside from a Chernobyl type disaster.

Mmmm well, I can't admit to anything since it was sort of extra legal.... but pictures can't do it justice. I don't know why, but I've always been into photos of things that have seen better days.

2008 was a pivotal year and people were not spending money. The mall cheapened up on their security, so instead of off duty Akron police they just used rent-a-cops and the gang kids started roaming the mall scaring people off. Someone was stabbed in the parking lot in the early 2000s ( the neighborhood around there was going down hill ) and people basically quit shopping there. Anchor stores started pulling out and then smaller stores did the same. By 2007 is was still an amazing arcitectural design and one of the coolest for a mall, but pretty much a ghosttown. They closed it in 2008 and then vandals kept breaking in to destroy the place. They are tearing it down as we speak.

The demolition cost of all that concrete would have to be astronomical.

The story about Ghost Tower is right in the link I posted.

There were some near the ocean that flooded, which stopped the construction immediately. They never completed them, just 20 story tall condos near the beach, complete swampland below them.
It could have been like living in Venice, LOL!

There's an abandoned motel on a hill near me. The weird thing is, the lights are on at night, all of them. So that leaves me wondering who is paying the power bill.

Looks like you beat the holiday crowds!

Everything that looked like that around where I live became million dollar lofts for rich hipsters. Gentrification is what that mall needs. o_O

Heard about Hashima Island off the coast of Japan? If I were a billionaire many times over, I would buy it and become an evil villain.

The mall here near me is about a minute from going tits up, but for some reason they still keep it open.
They used to have a Radio Shack, and it was the only reason I went in there. Now they're down to Belk, JC Penny & the theater as the biggest vendors in there.
The rest are just small-time operations, like a massage joint, a jewelry store, and a barber shop.
I think even the mobile sellers, Verizon & Sprint, have moved out.

Speaking of cranking it up, I'd love to take a huge amp and a couple of 4x12s there (with a generator, natch!) and really crank it up! I could really get in some quality time with a Sunn 0))) in this place!

Cheese and Rice, so now you're going to troll me over grammar?!

Motörhead knocked the plaster off a ceiling like that, so be careful.
I don't think it was a small amount of plaster.
