    :huh
I have a VHT special six ultra combo that I am really digging. It has the stock tubes consisting of one 6V6 in the power section, and two 12AX7's in the preamp section. My one complaint is that using the Ultra channel, the back ground noise is annoying. I am not a high gain player, mostly blues oriented material.
I have the following list of tubes that I am considering giving a try:
6V6 JJ brand- I am going to get this one without a doubt.
    12AX7/ECC83 JJ brand
    12AX7/ECC Gold pin JJ brand
    12AX7 Tungsol brand
Since this is my first attempt at tube swapping is this a good start? Am I over duplicating by ordering three 12AX7's, vs trying something a little different?
    Thanks

    Skip the gold pin JJ.

    You want new production yes/

    I'd get 1 JJ ECC83
    1 tungsol
    1 new' mullard'
Those 3 should sound quite different (IMO) and give you a good idea what you like.

JJ 6v6 is good. What's in there now though?

You might try a lower gain tube in V1 like a 5751.

big Mike, thanks for the suggestions. That does sound like a good place to start. I have read conflicting reviews on the gold pin, with some stating a subtle change.
As for the 6V6, the tube reads 6V6GT Made in China June 2010.
I was reading about the 5751 as well. Do you think I should start here as well?

Cool the JJ will be diffrent then.

5751s are nice for lowering the gain a tad if you want that.
I use them from time to time in certain amps.

12Ay7 will do that too to a more drastic degree.

OK thanks, I will go with the first three that you recommended as a start.
What is with the pre amp matching that some web sellers offer? Is this optimal, or better for some designs?

Some recommend balanced phase inverter preamp tube.
I don't subscribe to the theory and never worry about it.

Is there any order that you would suggest trailing the pre amp tubes? That is in V1 or V2?

Snake oil in a guitar amp. At least IMO.
