Where would you buy it?
Used? From Mesa? Musician's Friend? Avatar? Etc etc.
Amazon. I have a prime account so I try to buy all my goods through Amazon if the price is right.
Avatar (Hellatone 60). I've bought two loaded cabs from Avatar; last one with the Hellatone 30/60 mix in a Vintage 2x12 and love it. Not sure of their exact break in process of the Hellatones, but sounds better than a stock new V30 I've had previously. Unsure sure of their single speaker price, but purchased in a cab it seemed like a good deal; email them for a quote. I've always had great service with them as well.
Just the speaker itself?
Badcat makes a custom made Celestion that ios like a V30 except it has a special cone and build specs. Celestion only makes them for badcat and they sound killer.
It's a 65 watt speaker and if you want a speaker that can handle the power and sound just as sweet, I would go for the Badcat. This is one of my favorite speakers now as we tested it for weeks.
We are getting them for our new cabs. I have the V30s in other amps and the new badcat has a whole new tone.
Call em up and tell them you are a member here, they will cut you a deal.
From Mesa - they're made in England especially for them.
I have yet to see anyone sell them for less than Avatar !
I have a Harma Vintage Ruby in my Germino 45. Harma is a new brand from Whatford Valves in the UK. I've a couple of speakers from them and they are my favourites. It's a V30-type, but with such a nicer, articulate, deatailed and more balanced tone. Reminds me of the Eminences I've played. I've gone thru a ton of speakers with that amp to find my perfect pairing. I think, generally, that the V30 works very well for a great 'British sound', but there are much better versions of it out there to try than the original. IMO.
Shop here on TGP, MLP forum, Ebay and Craigslist.
Try Craigs first so you don't lose $20 for shipping.
The ones from Mesa are different from the ones from Marshall are different than the ones from everyone else. Do more research into the sound you are looking for before you buy.
I'd buy used, preferably a UK-made speaker.
this guy is legit, have not seen anyone get close to his prices
Avatar Speakers because others sell the same speaker for higher prices.
I would buy the Hellatone 30's from them as they are the same speaker as the V30's but already broken in for you. And you can peel the Hellatone 30 sticker off , which is placed right over the original Celestion sticker very easily if it bothers you.
Sweetwater. Order now and it will ship today.
I would go with Avatar speakers and get the Hellatone 60. That said I would look for a used V30, plenty out there.
Sweetwater or Amazon
Mesa. As mentioned above they are made to different specs and sound better to my ears. I've owned the Mesa, Marshall, and the standard English made V30s. They all sound a little different. The Mesa wins for me.
This thread will help explain the differences:
That thread should really be a sticky.
So if my favorite guitar player had a homemade cab built in the late 80s with vintage 30s....they were really labeled as marshall 30s?
Everything I read about this guys cab refers to them as celestion vintage 30s.
