I'm looking for a bass

I'm not a bass player. I sometimes play bass. I'm looking for a short scale (30.5") bass that sounds decent and has a tonal spectrum. Two pickups preferred. I don't want to spend a bundle on something I use once in a while.

The pickups on my current cheap bass ( second hand from a friend) hum and build up a static charge when I play it. The amp is fine. We've checked it with a good bass, and my bass does it on everything. It will cost more to fix than its worth plus it's a full scale.

Do you guys have any suggestions? $500 new is the budget. Used okay.

Check out what came up at GBase using "short scale bass" for a search:

That Hofner Galaxie has a nice "retro" look; the new Flea Bass Juniors look pretty cool as well. There's always a Gibson SG type bass or EB3 but probably more than your budget.

I'd consider (test drive) a full scale Fender P, J (maybe Squire) and see if you can hang with the scale (34").

I've got a 34" right now. It's pretty hard to play. I don't have a lot of stretch in the fingers. Small hands..... I was looking at the EB3 but it's only the neck pickup, but that may have to do.

I have a 1977 Fender Musicmaster bass I am about to sell for $500. It is black, all original, sounds deep, in excellent condition. The bass is short scale and easy to get around on. Comes w/ original case plus gigbag. Let me know if this interests you. I'm at "[email protected]".

Thanks guys. I just got hit with about $500 in medical bills. A bass upgrade will have to wait a couple months.
