I was cruising through the local CL ads (sometimes a cool opportunity will present itself) and spotted this little gem (sorry for the length but it is a long one). The line about "improvisational nonsense" caught my eye and gave me a bit of a chuckle, particularly in light of some of the players they cite at the end, so I thought I'd share it as some of MY favorite players (like Robben, Larry, Duane, Dickey, Rory, Roy, to name a few) play the blues and are/were masters of improvisation, not to mention I love to improvise. Seems to me that someone has a pretty limited view. To each his ow, I guess. I wish 'em luck.

looking for a versatile guitar player.
For Pop / Rock / Electronic project.
This is an original band not a cover band.

Recent Photo, Short Bio, and Musical example are required.
    No exceptions.

Looking for someone who is a good player of many styles.
We are trying to create our own sound.
We are doing a lot of experimentation with styles.
But at the same time we have specific tastes in mind.

Straight away, this is not a typical "Rock n Roll" type band with that typical setup.
We're doing things differently and approaching everything from a different perspective.

This is NOT a jam band, or a blues band or any kind of improvisational nonsense.
This is NOT a metal band.
What we do is very intentional and structured.

This is more of a recording and writing project and less of a endless rehearsal
type band. We are very close to starting to perform.
But we are continuing to write and record new material and would like to integrate a new guitar player into that process too.
We are dedicated and serious and looking for someone who is pro and ready to go.

We prefer to use Amp modelers to live amps.
We do not want to deal with that kind of volume issue.
We have several amp modelers, but you are encouraged to have your own.
A good variety of guitars and effects are also encouraged.

We're looking for someone who is comfortable playing a variety of styles.
And has a wide vocabulary of music they like and know well.
We like to experiment and juxtapose ideas that might not be traditionally combined.
We know exactly what we like and what we want, but are always looking to expand our palate.

The music we're doing is very commercial, but at the same time quite experimental.
We're trying to find new and exciting ways to write pop songs.

    Guitar Players admire:
(We are not trying to sound exactly like any of these players,
nor do we expect you to sound exactly like any of these players)

Nile Rodgers, The Edge, Mark Ronson, Lindsey Buckingham, Billy Corgan,
Steve Stevens, Prince, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Brian May, Les Paul,
David Gilmour, Warren Cuccurullo, Alex Lifeson, Robert Fripp, Joe Walsh,
Duke Erickson, Steve Marker, Bob Mothersbaugh, Johnny Marr, Jimmy Page,
Jimmy Nolen, John Frusciante, Freddie Stone, Mark Knopfler, Andy Summers, Mick Ronson.
Annie Clark, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix.

Open to any gender, race or age. Dress code wise, we are going for a well groomed look.
No mountain man beards, flannel shirts or mom jeans please.

We are almost finished with our debut EP and want to start performing soon.

Please email a photo, mp3 or link to some music examples, and a short bio.
Apologies, we will not reply to anyone who doesn't send us photo and examples.

    Guitar player wanted.
    Guitarist needed.

Quite a list of requirements for not specifying the pay rate.

If they are good enough to do what they say, why are they on CL? They should return the favor in kind and volunteer some example clips. They aren't a jam band and they are making experimental music that is commercially viable? Prove it. They don't want me to waste their time? Understood. Prove they are not wasting mine.

Instead of specifying what they don't want they should explain what they do want. They want someone versatile with many styles but not anything like the list of icon players. This ad hardly makes any sense. Maybe Henry Kaiser or Fred Frith would fit their bill.

Serious question: Why would you want to play music with anyone who can't spell JIMI Hendrix correctly?

A couple of big mirrors, dim lights and combustible dreams of rock’n’roll glory.

They could be the next Becker and Fagen ...or Wayne and Garth.

Pretty picky for a craigslist ad. Panning for gold in the bottom of the barrel.

interesting...if they are into: ""improvisational nonsense"
why would they care about "dress code"?
i'm thinking this band needs: David Torn, or Tin Machine era Reeves Gabrels or the Sun Ra of guitar (is there such a person?)...or the many hats that Vernon Reid wears and plays -i'm thinking Yohimbe Brothers Reid (or probably more Freeform Funky Freqs)....or the Grimes Version of a guitar hero...or probably Buckethead....
    I'm thinking this:

    not suits and ties!

The ad reads as coming from controlling people. This being said, if that's really what they want, its their right to advertise for it.

Experimental and commercial? Isn’t that an oxymoron?
Kind of sounds like they want a good studio guitarist.

wait, i read it wrong, they are this:

    but not this:

so you can ignore my previous posts above...I'm not sure what they want...upon rereading it, I thought if they want "structured" that's Zappa, but he was all about improvisation....so I'm not sure what they want. whoever gets the gig, report back, would love to hear what this is.....
