There is a lodge in my town and several friends are members. They are urging me to join.

Anyone here a member and can share their experiences with IOOF?

There was one in downtown Ventura I'd walk past. Never knew what they were up to ... it was indeed odd.

From their Mission statement on their website:

The command of the IOOF is to”visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan.” Specifically, IOOF today are dedicated to the following purposes:

    • To improve and elevate the character of mankind by promoting the principles of friendship, love, truth, faith, hope, charity and universal justice.
    • To help make the world a better place to live by aiding each other, the community, the less fortunate, the youth, the elderly, the environment and the community in every way possible.
    • To promote good will and harmony amongst peoples and nations through the principle of universal fraternity, holding the belief that all men and women regardless of race, nationality, religion, social status, gender, rank and station are brothers and sisters.

Huh, whatdoyouknow. There's a chapter here. They look pretty charitable, although not nearly mysterious enough. But if there was ever a club I'd join, I'd say that sure sounds right. I'll follow them on FB and see what turns up. Upon closer examination, it looks like a good group of people doing good work. One of the requirements, however, is belief in a Supreme Being. I'm not sure they'll accept the Flying Spaghetti Monster. If they will, we'll see - otherwise they sound a little like the Masons.

I'd go just to shout "Firehouse!" at inopportune moments.

Seem like a nice bunch of peeps.
Any group that can count among its former members FDR, Charlie Chaplin, Charles Lindbergh, Earl Warren, U.S. Grant, Wyatt Earp and Rbt. Byrd is pretty diverse.

Their command to "bury the dead" seems almost Monty Python-like..... I mean, are there clubs that promote NOT burying the dead? Or even digging them up?
