I am interesting for a clean that has some character from a relatively small and hopefully inexpensive amp. It could be either tube or solid state.

What's your budget, and how small?

People knock it, but the Peavey Mini Collossal had a nice, champ-like clean, and sounds great after the speaker breaks in, or after upgrading the speaker.

A little bigger (but still small) the Laney VC15 has some of my favorite cleans to date! I sold it, and regret it. If the missus would let me, I'd buy another today!

Excellent choice! Mesa makes solid, great sounding amps! If this is within the budget, I'd also like to throw used Mesa Express, or used TA15 into the mix!

Champion 600 is small and inexpensive! . . a youtube exploration wasn't that impressive, as far as the character of the cleans.

I don't know what inexpensive is, but I have always loved the Fender Princeton clean tones.

Some Guitar Centers carry the Bugera V22. The clean is amazing and it's slightly different than most cleans. It's a little mellower. (that's good too)

Some people have nasty things to say about the build quality, others say no problem, but very few people are not impressed with the sound. I personally never had any trouble with the build quality either.

The best sound you are going to find in a small amp is a Quilter

Vintage Music Man amps have ample clean head room and can be had starting at around $500. They are a hybrid amp, they have power tubes and a solid state pre-amp section. There was one recently for sale in the emporium!

I think I found what I want and it isn't what I expected. It is the sound of an EHX Germanium 4 fuzz on very low setting so there is a slight granular quality.

Thanks for your suggestions! : )
