Well, nobody in the '70s seemed to think he was great in the way that Emerson, Wakefield, Tony Banks, or the jazz rock fusion guys were great but he sure is mighty good.
However, if you are looking for a keys player for a rock band and find one whose hero is Elton..beware.
If your goal is Jon Lord it is a bad bad choice.

You could make a case that is the definition of a great player. Playing a part that fits the song perfectly.

I'd bet in his prime he could play classical stuff and jam.

Didn't fit his style, he did pretty damn well.

And this, as they say, is where the money is.

He's no Keith Emerson, but pretty good.

Disclaimer: I absolutely cannot stand Elton John; his songs, voice and general attitude make me want to punch him in the face but...

He can definitely play, and play very well.

I've played with him (at a jam, the China Club, LA, 1990(89?))
Rockabilly, blues, r&b, a couple of his own songs.
    He can play.
    Really.

Great rock pianist, great singer, great songwriter, great showman, imo. One of the all-time great rock and roll musicians.

He won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music when he was 11. He studied piano there for 5 years. So yeah, he had some classical chops.

Yes he is and probably more notably so in the beginning but as time went on he became more widely known for so much more and we tend to forget he even plays piano to some degree. Or at least we maybe take it for granted.

He a great Rock N' Roll pianist, yes.

But when someone simply says great pianist, I think of names like Van Cliburn.

Important question... At around 2:00, is Boris Becker moving from clapping on the 1, to the 2 & 4? Or is he just losing the time altogether?

No. Keith Emerson was a great piano player.
Rick Wakeman is a great piano player.
EJ is more known for his voice and his bizarre wardrobe than his piano playing.

"Great" according to whom? And compared to what?

Anyway, it doesn't matter. The piano is his main axe and he and Bernie Taupin have written some pretty awesome tunes. Whether someone thinks he's a "great" piano player is entirely beside the point.
