At what point does a large house become a mansion ? Lol. Just saw a monster sized house being built in the area. Is it one of those things where the answer is " I'm not sure but I'll know it when I see it "

My first reaction when seeing these giant houses (or mansions) is what does this person do for a living and if the TGP gang knew would he be ostracized for it. Bwaaahaaaa

When you have living quarters and separate areas for household staff to relax, it's a mansion.

I imagine a mansion to be on a reasonable plot of land as well. There should be room for tennis courts, both clay and grass surfaces as well as a batting cage. A full court basketball court is optional. The pool should be kidney shaped and have hot tubs available. An outdoor brick grilling station is mandatory. The stables should be at least half an acre away from the main house. The guests quarters can be closer than that of course.

Large houses with a postage stamp size yard are just obnoxious.

    :)

I'd way once you get to 14,000 square feet or so you're getting into mansion territory. As go cat go said, you need to have grounds also.

I would say that just a place for the staff to live would qualify as a mansion. My fraternity house back in college was definitely a mansion, but it didn't have a ton of land. Back in the early 20's, people, even wealthy people, didn't have the amenities that we would consider par for the course for the rich today. It was just a really big house on a cliff with a nice view.

So, maybe 5000 square feet to start, and specialized facilities within the house (say for a nanny, or a screening room) would probably qualify.

I have a friend with a 10,000 square foot house. It's a big, nice house, but in my mind it's not a mansion.

    Several immediate qualifiers come to mind;
If it has a "wrapping room",
If it has a service entrance,
If it has a separate house for "guest quarters",
If it requires a staff to manage it,
    it is a mansion, period.

    OK, with exceptions, yada ya.

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules, but this seems pretty sensible.

    Peace,

A mansion is a state of mind. My 2 bedroom apartment is a mansion compared to the basement apartment we had before.

Neil Young has one. I've never heard this. Love the guitar and I don't usually say that about Neil Young.

If the outer walls are wood and not stone and it's less than 20,000 square feet, it's a house.

according to wiki: A mansion is a large dwelling house.

it's funny, when i was a kid, we would always see big houses, and refer to them as "mansions", so i always assumed it was stuff that was way bigger than my parents 900 sq ft ranch.

i'm sure with how large houses are made nowadays, it certainly has changed the definition of "mansion"

Here is the funny thing i think of, being a huge fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, i'm not sure if i ever thought of fallingwater as a mansion, but when i visited there back in 2003, on the tour of the
house they said one thing to think of was the house (a weekend/vacation house mind you) was made for having 5 servants there when the family was there. i think the house is a bit over 3000
square feet, which if you think of house in the 30s is quite large.

A house I worked on had a 1,600 sq/ft "apartment" in the house for the maid.

Wrong...maybe a few blocks in the flatlands are like that, but not north of Sunset...

A mansion we did in Beverly Hills has two elevators, two grand staircases, a 12 car garage with two service bays (complete with lifts) attached to it and a gas pump...oh and the pool house is 3,000 square feet. It is 50,000 square feet, sits on 4 flat acres of prime real estate and cost the dude $30 million. I'd say that qualifies.
