Not asking whether or not you should, or whether it's stupid not to, but is it illegal if you breeze by the many stop signs in store parking lots, particularly the many across huge mall landscapes. Can you be ticketed like a normal city street?

If it's an official state sign, I would say yes.

I think that's the question as parking lots tend to be private property. Are they implemented voluntarily by the property owners, or are they official state/county signs? I don't have the answer.

    apparently, it depends.
Some states all traffic rules apply to any public parking lots.
in other states you may not get a failure to stop ticket but you can get a carerless driving ticket.
(just like if you were speeding)
If the owner of the parking lot requests police to enforce stop signs they will
but a request must be made and forms signed.

In PA they have to be 8 feet.

Years ago, my grandfather knew a guy who ran a short one on purpose in front of a cop and he beat the ticket when he showed it wasn't high enough. A gamble, but he won.

Many if these are non-standard signs-non-reflective paint, odd heights, etc. You might have a legal argument, but stop means stop.

Though it's not a public right of way, if it is used regularly by the public, traffic laws may apply and be enforced.

    What did he win?
I think the hassle of having to show up in court is already a loss.

I roll through stop signs all the time in parking lots, but only if no one is crossing in front of me.

It would likely depend on which state you are in.

I usually do it in a state of euphoria.

People break the law every day. How many of you cruise at 5 mph over the speed limit on the highway?

In many instances the police are not able to enforce penalties when your car is damaged on private property like a grocery store parking lot and so it would be a stretch to think that they could enforce a penalty when a driver did not stop because the property owner installed a 1/2 size unofficial red sign with the letters S T O P on it.

YMMV - different states, different rules, opinions are like . . .

I agree, ridiculous waste of time and energy on his part, to prove a point, apparently.

If you ignore the stop sign, who is going to give you a ticket? Are there police traffic cameras on the lot?

North pittsburgh here and the cops sit in one our plazas quite often. A funky little 3 way, with 2 official stop signs and stop painted on the other road. You see people pulled over a lot. Especially during the holidays.

OK, so if that's true then they are municipally enforced, therefore yes it is illegal to not stop for it.

In BC, the statutory definition of "highway" includes "every private place or passageway to which the public, for the purpose of the parking or servicing of vehicles, has access or is invited". So all the rules that apply on public roads apply in parking lots.

This is apparently the case in every province except Ontario.
