Is It Necessary to Use A Power Amp for the Axe8 and the Helix?

Is it necessary to use a power amp with the Axe8 and the Helix? I've read that people run these direct into the board and into amplifiers. However, I'm starting to see more and more references to power amps, so I started wondering what people are doing.

Some are using power amps (or amp return) to go to guitar cabs instead of powered monitors, PA cabs and/or direct to FOH; be sure to turn off the cabs in the modeler if you do use actual guitar cabs.
