We have five of his CDs. Originally it was my wife who liked him, but as I listened to these CDs I began to really like a lot of his stuff.

I wonder if some people only listen to one or two types of music. I don't mind if something is commercial as long as it's good. I always did like a well-crafted pop song and admire those who can come up with them. I listen to a lot of other stuff too, that's not commercial. I won't rule something out for being mainstream.

The thing about Mayer: he really is a master at creating pop songs. On these songs he plays at well below his technical ability, so the songs come over as pretty relaxed. His playing is very tasteful and he's one of the dwindling few who use the guitar in the context of the modern pop song.

He's a very good player and musician.

WHERE THE LIGHT IS: JM LIVE IN LA. Just sit through this DVD and you'll get your answer.

Enough of the quibbling, guys. Esp those of you whose views on his guitar skills are colored by what you might've read or seen on tmz. Jeez.

probably because he gets talked about more than blackmore and is more current as player and celeb since he tags hot celebs, breaks up with them and they cant get over him. mostly because haters are upset at the celeb women this guy has had and other women that throw themselves at this guy.

he can probably run circles around most players here in guitar talent and song writing. if others were as great as they say they would have his fame or better. they dont though.

I had just read too many posts in other threads saying the guy couldn't play. If the unskilleds accounted for 10% or more, we would have qualified as clinically insane. Not that there is anything wrong with that. You just need to know if you are communicating with a person (or group of people) that is insane so you can tailor you communications to suit the audience.

His acoustic chops are great, especially from Room For Squares. I've seen him live several times and I'm amazed at his acoustic playing while singing a totally different rhythm.

    It's probably closer to 99.9%.

I'm not really a John Mayer fan (don't own any of his records), but anyone who would deny that he's "a skilled guitarist" is either joking or completely clueless.

Exactly. I probably wouldn't care for the dude in person because I think he's a bit arrogant from what I've read. But that's heresay. I will say one thing... He can sure play. Those that objectively voted no either can't tell a good player from bad player, is just rocking the boat, simply jealous of his abilities, or knows nothing about him... Or, it's the type of person that will argue the sky is blue when it's actually pouring rain outside.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Oh and I vote "clueless". Perhaps jealous too, but definitely clueless.

I'm a fan of his youtubes ... just watch him play ...
So Simple to Grok... Dude has done his homework ..
Is mega talented on so many levels ...

Check out the DVD Possibilities ...
it's a Documentary of Herbie Hancock rehearsing the tunes that on his masterful CD of the same name ...
You can see how exceptionally skilled and talented JM comes off as in that video.
Plus, the respect and honor he shows towards Herbie is very cool.

He's an ok player in the context of the songs he writes and performs. He plays the usual blues based stuff that everybody plays though. He obviously has some skill at playing it but it's more about the songs than actually highlighting his playing. He's a blues/pop stylist.
