Just wondered .... you'd think some people would still like to make their own brand of whatever it is they make.... :drink ..... but it's probably dangerous, having a fire going in the basement and all that. :red

You can make it, you just can't sell it legally.

Not here in MI. You can get a small distiller license for 100 bucks a year but that's small as in 'small business' and you need some sort of treasury permit to apply for the state license. It makes no sense for an individual.

I started a thread about this a while back. It would be nice if homebrew stores would set up a licensed still, and process customers' home brewed mash for a fee.

Not even sure about that ....

And it may depend on the state and whether the Feds catch you or the local State police ....

...as long as you have a license to distill, you can legally make it all day long.

Sorry. The moon doesn't "shine". It only reflects light.

Something that surprised me about a recent trip to Puerto Rico, their local moonshine, pitorro, is widespread and consumed openly, despite being illegal, by people of all social classes and education level. I went to a pretty nice wedding full of respectable people and the stuff was flowing freely.

    It's actually quite tasty.

Where in the CONUS is it legal to distill for your own use?

I know it is legal to brew beer and make wine, but distillation remains illegal without a permit / taxes paid in every state in the union as far as I know.

can't make it in Indiana. homemade beer, yes. maybe the reasoning is; a bad batch of beer might make you sick but bad liquor can kill you.

you can make any kind of alcohol as long as a yeast is producing it.
this limits the strength naturally. most yeast will die at around 20%
when you distill you can make 200proof (100%) which is considered poison.
    and illegal.
there are ways to boost alcohol percentage legally
german bock beers take a beer that has been naturally
fermented then freeze it and put the part that doesnt freeze (alcohol) into another beer.
(single bock) freeze that again and its a double bock etc

but in general really high proof beers are gross. English Barley wines are a sipping beer at around 15-20%

the most quaffable high percentage beers are belgian and/or french ales. Often a 9% belgian drinks as smooth as a 5%
    these beers are deceptively strong.

So THAT'S how they do it. I'm sure this applies to Old E, Dogbite, Steel Reserve, etc etc etc.z

For the record, I draw the line at Old English and only drink it if The Chronic is playing. It's actually pretty good. After a couple blunts.
