You could break it in half and examine the wood.

    Most likely it is mahogany.

Is it yours? Pull the neck pup and look at the neck. Take a pic for us if you aren't sure. The only absolute with Gibson is that there are no absolutes. In rough terms, maple neck Customs ran from '75 through '82 (maybe even through '85).

    Remove the Truss Rod cover.
Take a look and see if it looks like maple or mahogany.
If you don't know, take a clear picture and come back here.

Cool, thats what i wanted to know. It could be one piece of mahogany or 3, or 3p maple.

Not mine, i asked the seller and he says he dont know, so he sent me those pics.

Also, i thought before that volute = mahogany neck.

Calling Gibson is not a bad idea either. When I asked for details on 2 guitars I was thinking of buying, they even attached photos from the old catalogs of those guitars I asked about with the spec for each one.

Hint: You can't tell what the neck material is if you can't see it.

This. Better than my suggestion. Easier than pulling a pickup.

    Why all the grief, people?

Sometimes you CAN tell what kind of wood it is. I have a black beauty custom, and at the right angle, I can see the mahogany grain on the back of the headstock.

Those pictures aren't sufficient to tell though.
