After disappearing into the depths of my shop for a few months, I now re-emerge with pictures/video of some completed ValcoCasters. I will try harder to keep this thread active and post progress of my upcoming builds (intended for the Montreal Guitar Show).

And for a clean(ish) demo and a (sort of) shop tour: www.islandinstruments.tumblr.com

The guitar pictured was shipped to the UK, the one in the video is heading off to the Land Down Under and the one in the video background (with custom humbucker, and brass fret markers is going to the incomparable Bo Ramsey)

Thanks Rumble! Distinct is what I'm going for. I'd love to hear some more feedback.

Design on the show guitars started today. More on that next week.

Some more info on these bodies:

The one with the Holly top and small small ebony stripes if my Fourty Four model, based on the Harmony H44 Stratotone. It has a 1 piece reclaimed Cedro Espino back, a beautifully quartered Poplar neck (that I'm thinking about bleaching) and I'm not 100% decided on the fretboard, but I'm thinking ebonized Black Locust.

The other one is a modified Danelectro shape. It will be a baritone. Reclaimed Douglas Fir, perfectly quartered and bookmatched, back. Curly cherry neck and Black Locust (not ebonized) fetboard. Custom hardware by MIchael at Armadillo Machine Works.

Both guitars will have very custom pickups by Pete Biltoft at Vintage VIbe.

    Thoughts?

And the Fourty Four. Reclaimed Cedro Espino, 1-piece.

The gentleman in the background is one of a handful of guys I need to thank for being where I am today. He's also a huge influence on my guitars' aesthetics. www.52instruments.com

I received the custom Aluminium hardware from Armadillo yesterday. It's beautiful work and SOOOO light.

On the bench: binding the baritone and carving the neck. It's an exceptionally beautiful piece of curly Cherry, I'm trying my best to do it justice (it's getting there). The ivoroid binding is going to look real slick (it's not glued in the photo).

The end is getting nearer. They are just about to go into varnishing.

I've been (amazingly) keeping this quiet for some time. ValcoCaster #5 with leather "binding" made by my friend Marc Simard www.broundoor.com I will be bringing this guitar with me to the Montreal show as well.

I had a feeling you would dig that one Sam!

Here are the guitars in the U.V. booth after their first coats of varnish. They will even out and don't worry about the side splotches! They're spinning on disco-ball motors alongside the impeccably french polished guitars of Mike Kennedy: www.indianhillguitars.com

I look forward to seeing you too Dougie! Party time.

And here's the bridge-base for the Fourty-Four and my secret beveling jig. I think I will make the compton bridge standard when offering this style.

Valco #5 and the Fourty Four headstocks after first French Polish sessions. I'm off to start session number two now. These guitars are nearing completion. It feels like it's been forever.
