I've thought about Z-28...Scumbags looks mighty interestin'...then I see the Allen "Old Flame" with the 3 knob reverb...
I use to frequent the FDP back in the day ,& they were allways tryin to get the "F" place to come out with a "Vibro Prince"...a 22 watt amp with 3 knob verb.
Anyone have any experience with Allen amps or the Old Flame?

i'd look for a UV6 (head or combo) from DST-Engineering. GREAT amp and 6v6 based.

    I wasn't crazy about the Z-28.

I played a Bruno Cowtipper 22 with 6v6s that was AMAZING, but I needed more clean headroom for jazz, and it was pretty expensive anyway.

The 6V6 amp for me is a Tone King Comet. Great stuff from a well designed 1x12 cabinet (it's not directional at all) and the 40 lb weight is as good as I can do on the NYC subway stairs for tone like this.

The new ones are quite pricey, but I got mine used for just over a grand - and I expect it to be my #1 amp for a long long time.

i hate 6V6's. ratty low end, and equally ratty upper end. and the clean tones seemed a tad thin to me, especially after using 6L6 loaded amps for so long.

BUT with that said, i've been dumbfounded by a few amps...

my Alessandro Blue Tick with 6V6's has that trademark ally hifi high end, smooother midrange, and fat low end like no other amp i've ever heard. and the cleans? cmon, its an Alessandro!

and my recent aquisition, a Clark Lil Bit LTD completely belies its name. has a fat, thick, rich sound that instantly sends me to Duane land, while the clean tones are bell like, and will best ANY deluxe.

I heard a Carr Slant 6V once, and it sounded gorgeous. It captured everything I love about overdriven Fender 6V6 amps, but with more of it.

Get a Uni Valve or Bi Valve you can try them all.
And I like the 6V6 sound from the Uni ..

Or if you like a dark sound try an Emery

Another Tone King Comet 40A (112) owner here.
GREAT amp, with tones for single coils/p90's and humbuckers.
Nice package, built like a tank...and just plug and play. A pedal slut too!

Give a new Tone King Meteor II a try. Great cleans and verb and some nice features.

Its amazing how much different 6V6s can sound with different circuits so try some out.

Check out the 2-6v6 Gries amp w/Reverb and master control. Great Blackface sounding amp. All PTP wiring. You can see one at Juinior's Music in CT.

    6V6's rule!

You can't go wrong with old Fender Princetons and Deluxe Reverbs. They sound great and hold their value pretty well too.;)

    I'd love to hear a:

    Fuchs ODS30
    Orange Rockerverb 50
    Germino 40
    Victoria Double Deluxe

    Big 6V6 fan here...

If you want new - look at the Allen stuff (Brown Sugar, Hot Fudge, etc.). His designs are well thought out 'updates' of the trad Fender models he bases them on.

Vintage? The Gibson GA-19RVT Falcons from '60-'65 are probably the best 6V6 powered amps I've ever heard (and I've owned a '65 BFDR). They have a very fat tone, and don't 'mush' out like the BFDRs I've played - lots of definition when chording even at max volume. A '62-'64 Fender 6G2 Princeton is also a killer amp - different than a BFPR, more midrange grind (almost Marshally when cranked). Ampeg Reverberockets and Jets from the early '60s are also great amps.

Great amp - use the tone controls a lot for more versatility (info on this on my website) and use a 12AX7 phase inverter for more agression and 5751 for more clean headroom.

    I love 6V6 tubes!

I've got a few 6V6 amps around but the one I would classify as THE 6V6 tone is the Tamerlane "Hodgee Baba".I've got version one and it'll eat any Deluxe style amp alive!

That said, the Divided by 13 SJT or JRT ,Clark Beaufort , Savage Macht or Dr.Z Z-28 are good contenders as is the Germino Masonette if you'd care for some Marshall flavor with your 6V6's...

I've got two amps built by Jeff Check with single 6V6's in them and they are outstanding. I've also got a Maven Peal DZ44-6V6 on order and I'm looking forward to getting that puppy. It should be an amazing amp.
